The one thing bringing this down is the poor job done by the translators. Crunchyroll has the ranks all over the place and I'm baffled as to why Crunchyroll they don't simply look up the novels to get it right. And don't get even get me started on Admiral Sithole (it's Sitolet by the way).

Well, Sithole is not that bad, it's actually a real surname too.

Agreed. I hope when this is out on BD, they correct the subs to be in line with the novels.
Makes me wanna find a sub group using the novel names, or even the old OVA names.

I'm glad Nick at least notices the very fascist undertones involving Reinhard. That has all always been the major thing that has made me leery of as accepting LotGH's original OVA as one of the greatest anime series ever made. I've got my complaints involving Yang and his side too. (He is very much depicted uncritically as "a great man of history" no matter how humble and self-deprecating he is about it.)

But I'm glad that the Free Plants Alliance is getting a greater focus in this adaption. Even if the flaws of liberal democracy are becoming increasing clear to alot of people in this day and age without the need of fiction to point it out as some sort of shocking revelation, it's issues at least still make for more interesting talking points than the Galactic Empire's where everything boils down to "The ruling classes have grown decadent, the only thing that can save the empire is the new dynamic leadership of a visionary genius and his equally wise followers".

Of course we will see more of that bias to enlightened despotism and meritocracy eventually here... Yoshiki Tanaka is naturally predisposed to it judging by his work here and on The Heroic Legend of Arslan even more so.

This is very cute, but does Nick really not know?

Ah well, no spoilers!

Is that an official translation? Sithole is also in the subtitles on Hidive for the original version, and was consistent with what I remember from watching it the first time. If it is an error, then it isn't Crunchyroll's alone.

@Zeino Eh, it seemed to me that the author's heart was ultimately with democracy, even if its flaws were an important part of the series and its forces spoiler[don't win the day at the end of the series, though with the hope that democracy would ultimately win out over even Reinhard's more enlightened despotism, given the dependence of such enlightened despotism's benefits on the despot's enlightenment, something even Reinhard had trouble with at times, and something that is far from guaranteed to be passed to the next in line.] We can see this with Yang's character spoiler[as he had many chances to become such a enlightened despot himself, but consistently rejects that option, even when it could have helped him or prevented Reinhard from taking out the FPA. While it acknowledges that it would have made things easier for him, I think the story's heart was with Yang's consistent adherence to the principles of democracy and civilian control of the military/government.]

I always sit there and chuckle at people who are intimidated by LOGH's original length, especially since I've just sat through the 836th episode of One Piece without batting an eye. Razz Seriously though, I never saw the length as being much of an issue, as it's the polar opposite of a show that you should burn through in big chunks. Watch a few episodes, chew on them, then come back to it in another sitting. Eventually you'll make your way through. There's no rush.

As for this new adaptation, I'm at least generally curious as to what they're doing with it, and I know it's totally superficial, but I just cannot get past its appearance.

One of the things I love the most about LotGH, is that you see people being sceptical about its ideas, hesitant about its length, governed by "most people say it's good so it must not be as good as they are saying they are overestimating it" mentality, but then they reluctantly sink their teeth into it. First bites might seem a bit boring, but if you get past that, you lose your soul to this story.

Die Neue These is a very pleasant and worthy alternative, but the old series still remains better. New Yang is much more beautiful, but old Yang was much more charming and compelling.

One definite plus for the new series though are the women. They are all both more beautiful and more compelling, especially Frederica, who finally got the spunk she deserved as a soldier! It's about the only thing I'd exchange in the old series.

Well, I for one am a very serious socialist in political belief which is a from of governance not even considered by the story, so of course I am going to be super skeptical about its ideas half of which are in opposite to mine. And I have had more than my first bite of this franchise and have not lost my soul to it yet.

Well, OBVIOUSLY, people have different tastes so it doesn't mean that this will apply to everybody. That was how it went for me and the people I know about who watched it, at least.

You need to keep an open mind about the questions this series poses. You have a universal society that still struggles to make the jump from feudalism to capitalism, it's a given that socialism, which came chronologically afterwards as a political belief (at least in our modern history) wouldn't be an option yet. It's a comparison of two political systems; even if any of those systems aren't you cup of tea, I don't see a reason why you can't enjoy the debate.

Wasn't Russia a mostly feudal society?

Well, since socialism always inevitably leads to an authoritarian autocracy the Galactic Empire is the closest thing to your political beliefs.
