I'm a big fan of J-rock, and I'm always trying to find new groups to listen to, but they are always composed of men. Is there a reason for this? Are women simply not into performing J-rock or are they just not popular in North America?

Aikawa Nanase is probably qualified as J-Rock. Or Shiina Ringo... maybe not. You figure it out....

I'd say Aikawa Nanase qualifies, since she now has ex-Megadeth axe-slinger Marty Friedman touring with her (and helping write songs) all the time.
As for me personally, I consider Do As Infinity and The Brilliant Green JRock, though they have strong pop overtones. Same with Adenosine Tri-Phosphate. If you're into something just REALLY strange, check out eX-Girl. http://0505.net/ex-girl/ Their guitarist was in the mostly-female Super Junky Monkey, another JRock band. |

Aikawa Nanase and Shena Ringo are the most mainstream. There's also Youjeen.
For VK, there's Kana. And there are a billion punk girl bands. |

Show-ya was a very popular all girl rock band. Keiko Terada went solo, and I believe went through two other singers. They lasted throughout the 80s and into the start of the 90s. You can hear Terada in the 2nd OP/ED of Borgman. Show-ya also do a song on Cleopatra DC. The Video game Burai also has Show instrumental music. Really guitary stuff. The other interesting thing is the band members were in their 20s when they formed, which seems old for female musicians in Japan. The other cool thing is that Show-Ya wrote most of there songs IIRC.

Daria, the lead singer of FEEL SO BAD.
Yuki Mizuhara, the lead singer of the duo PAMELAH. They are the only ones I know as of late. |

Another band you should consider is Melt Banana. It's lead by frontwoman Yasuko Onuki and is just one of those bands that blow you away. It's got a punk/noise feel to it, with screeching vocals and hyper-rhythmic guitars...just craziness. So if your looking for something different, listen to them.

Try out Go Go 7188. I know that's a weird name for a band, but they play some amazing kick ass music. Their music is so energetic, retro (think kill bill or pulp fictionesque), and catchy.
I would recommend first listening to Ukifune, Aa Seishun, Bungu, Jet Ninjin, as well their cover of the Cutey Honey theme song! |

Isn't there one girl in Dir en Grey. *is sad that her Dir en Grey fandom has not reached out to investigate this* If that is a guy, then that is a very girl-looking guy.
And just some people know, Mana from Malice Mizer, mother of EGL and j-rock fan-fashion, IS A GUY! |

i don't know, but would yellow generation be considered j-rock or j-pop? they're all girls, and play guitar, drums, and bass i believe...

You're probably referring to the drummer Shinya...or bassist Toshiya...hmm...well anyways they are ALL MEN. Androgynous yes, but I love them. |

Yellow Generation doesn't play instruments. Most people consider them pop anyway.

Is Shonen Knife even considered J-Rock anymore seeing that they've made a few domestic (U.S.) releases?
Some of Puffy AmiYumi's songs can be considered J-Rock. |
