Not a big fan of the new character design, but holy crap, the battleships and action are looking freaking gorgeous.
I guess the battles will be breathtaking instead of epic slow burning with classical music in the background this time around. It will be interesting to watch.

Watched it, not that impressed. There is very little movement in the character animation just lip flaps and the CGI and 2D animation doesn't meld very well, looks a lot like Last Exile CGI but that show on the other hand had a lot of character fluidity and a lot better detail in its 2D drawings wheres as the new LOGH they are almost South Park simple character designs.
As to battles looks identical ship of the line slug fest combat to the original (which is a good thing) just with higher polygon ships, the lasers do move faster though and are the star wars style short blasts rather than the originals proper beam weapons, and theres some really dodgy CGI explosions.

Damn....these character designs look so samey and lacking in personality. It's not like I'm wearing nostalgia googles since I'm actually watching the original series for the first time in 2018....and while the animation is BARELY there, everything else tops this "kuroko no basket in space" bland atmosphere.

Y'all are complaining about too much stuff. The art design, the character designs, the CGI, etc. Why would they wanna go back to the same style they used back in the 70's???

Because it looked miles better than a generic bishie-fest done on the cheap?

The moment the character designs were revealed, and Julian looks like the most generic eroge MC that ever lived, I knew this was gonna be irredeemable trash.

I quite hate these character designs because they're painfully bland and boring, and lack any drama and flair. But I also can't help rolling my eyes at people complaining about a "bishie-fest". As if all these guys were not supposed to be handsome or downright pretty in the novel as well! (Spoiler: they are, a possible LoGH drinking game is "drink every time Tanaka goes out of his way to wax poetic about how beautiful Reinhard is"). As if the OVA character designs weren't developed to showcase that! (Spoiler: they were, sure, the very limited animation budget didn't really allow the original character designs to shine, but the pretty/handsome characters are very much so even in the OVA.)

“It’s not exactly the same as the old one!”
Give it a chance.

I think I've finally realized why the new designs are so very disappointing -- the whole casts seems to have a chronic case of "sameface."
In the original, the characters all had differing face shapes and expressive features that showed their personalities. Looking at this poster, you couldn't tell at a glance that Reinhard and Kircheis are very different from one another, or that Mittermeyer, as a character, is nothing at all like Oberstein. Nobody stands out from each other physically, either; if they all had the same color hair, you'd be hard-pressed to tell them apart. Heck, Frederica's face only differs from the male cast in that she has slightly wider eyes.
Since most of the characters spend their screentime in uniform, their faces are the only thing they have to visually establish their identities. The new designs have completely dropped the ball on that front.

Of course the OVA's character designs looked good, and of course Reinhard was the prettiest princess at the ball. But they looked good while also looking distinct, both as a whole and from one another. Every single bit of promotional material I've seen for this new adaptation makes the entire cast look like they just walked out of some third-rate light novel series. A show of this caliber deserves far better.

If you make a completely-unnecessary adaptation following what was arguably the most ambitious achievement in anime history, then damn straight you're being held on a very short leash. This new adaptation's staff still needs to justify why it even exists, much less why anyone should give it the time of day. As far as I'm concerned it's going to have to practically stand on its head for it to overcome its first impressions.

Pretty much what I said when the first PV was posted: the characters all look like twins with a different makeup. And the CG is no better, the starships are so glossy they look made of glass instead of metal, the explosions look like a joke , etc.
I always found the LOGH story along with the 17th century look of the empire aristocrats only so so, but I have always been deeply impressed by the characters design of the original series: they are lots of characters in this show, all deeply fleshed out, with their unique look and mannerism matching very well their identity. Spending half of your time trying to remember which character is talking will certainly not help the new version.

I don’t have any problem with the character design. I think it strikes a good balance of being a bit different, but still familiar. Actually, it might be too similar to the OVAs.
I do have a problem with the ship designs, though. They’re super generic. Which is a shame, because most of the OVA designs were brilliant. Not sure I’ll be able to cater to a new Brunhilde any time soon.
