While I'm happy that Kalafina will continue, if Kajiura isn't working with them then it's not really the same. Smart move would be to hire Kajiura for the Kalafina songs since she's freelancing and hopefully that manager just agrees with whatever Kajiura does.

that said, after all these years of Kalafina, I was kind of starting to see what a lot of people - including critics on this site - mean when they say all of Kajiura's music sounds the same. It doesn't all sound the same, especially her non-Kalafina stuff, but the Kalafina stuff was getting repetitive.

That said, she's repetitive but still good. Like MIKOTO, who composes songs for Rejet - there are certain marks from which you can just tell, almost from the opening seconds, that it's theirs, but the songs are still so complex and interesting that it doesn't matter.

. . . . . . . it would be amazing to hear Kajiura compose some things for 2.5D idol series, though. I'd like to see the genre sort of expand in that direction, musically. TsukiPro's unit Growth tends to sort of be stylistically similar to her things, but they're the only ones. (Also... whoever composes Shouta Aoi's solo music seems to really love Kajiura.
Example)

...ohmygod, the greatest thing ever would be the Doggy Black seiyuu combination + Kajiura's composition.

I saw Kalafina at Anime Central in 2013 and they were amazing, even though at that point I only knew their stuff from Madoka Magica (they did "Magia", "Mirai", and [IIRC] "Hikarifuru"). The ACen organizer who introduced them onstage said that Kalafina was literally his favorite group, and I don't doubt it.

I was about to say that Kalafina was clearly the best musical guest that ACen ever landed, but a fact-check shows me that The Pillows played ACen 2005 so… tough call.

Wow, was that really five years ago now? Still have fond memories of that concert and of getting to interview Kalafina for the site the next day. They're absolutely worth traveling a fair distance to see in concert. Will be curious to see how things change in the post-Kajiura era. I, too, hope that she might still be involved as a freelancer.

You know, while my first reaction to this was disappointment that Kajiura was leaving, and I do feel like the group just won't be the same without her writing their songs... I can't lie, I think the last truly great song they put out was Kimi no Gin no Niwa from the third Madoka Magica movie. Which was over four years ago. So I'm not sure this really counts as that big a loss, being that even with Kajiura they'd kinda fallen into a slump anyway. It really is quite a shame; The thing that initially made me fall in love with Kalafina was how their music was unlike anything else I'd heard... and yet for the past four years their music has basically just sounded like slight variations on the same one song. I mean it's a good song, don't get me wrong, I can only think of, like, three or four Kalafina songs I actively don't like (and I've heard all of them), but it's hard to deny that their more recent output really hasn't left much of an impression on me.

And I doubt they would ever be able to top the sheer perfection that is Seventh Heaven anyway.

A bit sad! Though I still hold Sprinter to be their best song, and its an early one in their history.

I don't think it suits Kalafina or Kajiura to restrict themselves to TV OP/EDs as they have fallen into.

So I guess I must root for the shakeup and hope they all go on to better things. I was first a fan of Kajiura for her video game soundtracks. If she'd do the score for another game I'd be thrilled.

I saw Kalafina at ACen as well.. and when The Pillows were there too. High and Mighty Color were cool musical guests as well.

Indeed, I last saw them in Sapporo late November 2017 (acoustic live).
