That's great news. Take that mobile phones. With that said...Now if only there were a way to get the good folks in Japan to stay in their homes to play on a home console that doesn't enable the issue.

With how terrible the Wii U sold, it's no surprise that there was a rise in sales compared to last year.

The Switch doesn't have a good 3rd party library in Japan and no Smash or Pokemon yet (although I will pass on Pokemon for the Switch if it does have real time combat). It will become better but not this year, I see the good stuff coming in 2019.

Are they saving it from themselves? Because again, this is just an increase over last year which had the Wii U selling practically nothing.

We don't know what Nintendo has in store yet for 2018. They have yet to do a Direct for the new year.

I'm sure that the upcoming Nintendo Direct will help propel the Nintendo Switch's sales to breakneck speed.

When is the next Direct? They usually announce them at least somewhat in advance but I haven't heard anything yet about it.

They are increasing mainstream interest in videogames even more once again, like they did inumerous times in the game industry. Wii U was one of their few flops, along with maybe Game Cube (Virtual Boy was just a minor experiment, so I don't think it actually counts). In the handheld front they had absolute dominance thus far too, and those were also the most popular videogames out there (to demonstrate that, there's the Nintendo DS in especial, which was only a bit behind the PS2 numbers, and that was one amazing console in all ways imaginable, the highest selling videogame of all time).
Sony also got it quite well in the industry, but Nintendo is the one with most numbers of savings of them all. Not quite sure what are you talking about when saying "saving from themselves", as they were doing just fine in the industry besides having a flop or two in the console side (Because yeah, the Wii sold more than 100 million, is not like they have been any bad in their console business some years ago either.
The Switch is just yet another huge sucess that lauched yet again great overall interest in videogames, for everyone. And I'm not even seeing too much of an effort put in advertising at least in the countries I've been last year (the ones I've seen were online only).
It's funny that my friends opted to buy the Switch instead of a PS4 when in my opinion is such the better option as of now, in terms of numbers in game library and technical aspects in general. And maybe I'm doing the same too, more because I just have to experience BotW and Mario Odyssey by myself. It's incredible how 2 games can popularize a whole console with their quality alone.

....That would also potentially cause the other shoe to drop where arcades are concerned but as it is it's not an issue like most people like to make it out to be.

A minor experiment that went to retail and was intended to have a somewhat longer run I mean if we're going to play it like that then we might as well say the N-Gage was a minor experiment even though it was intended to compete with the Advance and even stuck around long enough to get a 2nd gen revision.
