This is good news. It is nice to see live action j-dramas being licensed. I hope this starts a new trend.
I have not seen the 70's version of this but the newer one was pretty good. I did not read the manga first so I cannot say how well it related. |

A little off topic, but I remember a few years ago that Darren Aronofsky (Pi, Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain) was writing a script to make a live action adaptation of Lone Wolf & Cub, but I guess that got scrapped. I think it would have been cool to see his crazy take.
Anyway, it's nice to hear that Media Blasters picked this up. I may check it out. |

Cool about time someone brings this classic show to the USA.
I own a fansubbed version of it. The show is really awesome and true to the original manga story. I've read the manga that was released by Dark Horse comics. A really awesome story, I recommend that you read the manga then watch it come to life on the tv show, it's really awesome!!!

Is there really a market for this? I know a few live-action movies have done okay but a whole series that's 79 episodes long and was made in the '70s?
This gives me the same vibe I got from the AOL and Time Warner merger. (For those who have no idea, that was a bit of a disaster.) Unless they got the series for practically nothing, this sounds like a major disaster regardless of the show's quality. A lot of people won't even buy a series from five years ago, let alone thirty. And no, this has nothing to do with me being angry at MB for dubless anime. This just sounds like a really big mistake to me. |

It's had an influence on a lot of people from Darren Aronofsky to Max Allan Collins to the Wu-Tang Clan to Quentin Tarantino and so on. So, yeah, I'd say a fairly large one. Besides, live-action is where Media Blasters (and Animeigo) make all their money these days anyways. If the potential for success wasn't there, they'd probably pass on it, but it is Lone Wolf & Cub after all. |

1- MB is dubbing Dojin Works, Genshiken OVA /Kujibiki Unbalance TV, apparently Genshiken 2, Ikki Tosen 2, and Tweeny Witches. [and I can't blame em for the subbed releases they are doing, as we're getting series we wouldn't get otherwise, and they're probably making a profit off of stuff that they'd lose money on otherwise. Current Anime Market=UberNiche/Plagued by non-buying fandom] 2- The Lone Wolf and Cub movies are also from the 60's/70's, and they've sold quite well for Animeigo [who primarily do live action japanese movies nowadays outside of Urusei Yatsura and now Yawara], so I imagine the TV series'll do decently for MB, which'll probably do a similar release to Zaitochi [which probably did okay for them if they're doing another samurai TV series from the 70's.... usually they only license more series in a given genre if their first experiment did well]- mini 2disc boxsets, followed by bigger boxsets. Given Lone Wolf and Cub's potential audience is pretty big [a best selling GN series aimed at adults that's a longtime classic, and a popular series of movies referenced in Kill Bill], compared to most anime, I'd say MB should do good. [and there's a lot more shelf space for live action stuff in stores then there is for the very crowded anime section] |

If so it's a big mistake that I've been wanting someone to make for a long time. There's only so much Zatoichi I can take, but Lone Wolf and Cub I will snap up. |

For those who think this is a mistake you are thinking from the anime fan perspective. There are a lot of "Samurai era" live action stuff out there who are not anime fan who are totally willing to buy stuff like this. I work at a comic book store and most of the customers there would never touch a manga but there is a lot of them who read Lone Wolf and Cub, in fact it's one of our better selling manga. So really something like this isn't for anime fans but more for people who like Akira Kurosawa movies.

This was my introductions into the franchise back in the 70s. I had completely forgotten about it when the manga was released in the States in the late 80s. It was like having a weird sense of deja vu until I realized that I was familiar with the story.

Swanky. I was wondering when we'd hear official news on this.
I was at the Media Blasters panel at Otakon this year -- they're pretty cool dudes, and John Sirabella is a very patient and understanding chap. Anyway, someone asked them about Zatoichi TV and was wondering if they would be bringing more chanbara/samurai shows/flicks to the states. Sirabella said "Zatoichi is doing well for us, so we might bring some more episodes of that. And as for future stuff; we are looking into the Lone Wolf and Cub TV series." He went on to say he couldn't talk about release dates, DVD structure, or even which series it was. And that was the last time I heard of it. No anime website jumped on the rumors. I had all but forgotten about it and then I hear this. So it wasn't all just some crazy dream.  ;
I'm definitely getting this when it comes out. |

Yeah, I can totally see there being a market for this, and a bulk of that market being outside of anime fandom. I know quite a few people who are really into the samurai movies/old Japanese movies, this would be right up their alley. Plus, some of these people have no idea what anime is or think it's porn. Film buffs who love movies like Seven Samurai or Twilight Samurai would probably be interested in this series.
