i don't know if a guy whose creative ideas amount to "woah dude, what if a GIRL was STUPID" is who i trust to be understanding about other people. still... without being a manga artist, i don't have the experience actually know if he's right or wrong.

I don't think the chart was too unrealistic. It's already known that you don't make THAT much as a manga artist, unless you r insanely popular. Then again, i guess some of it can be mislead so that people would buy more of the authors work to.help support him. Then again, what's the problem with that?? I think people should buy more manga anyways!

Definitely unrealistic, I'm not sure how he can pay almost $20k in taxes when income is only $36.5k? So what Japan has a 55% tax rate LOL?
What about all the tax deductions you could make as a creator: rent, telephone, stationary, food etc which basically means the job would be funding his everyday lifestyle.
Nothing makes sense here.

Would not be too surprised if the author of Mr. Nietzsche wants to pull a tax evasion in plain sight (like the author of Log Horizon tried to do when no one was looking).

Based on some of the other comments, I'm guessing that tax amount is for the entire year, while his stated income here is just for the year so far, so he's got another $30k to make by the end of the year in income, with no more taxes. Looking at it that way, he should be just fine. $65k in income with $20k in taxes is much more reasonable(Though I still question if he couldn't use some deductions...).

I cant believe manga authors make as much as the average base level STEM worker. Why work in aniManga killing yourself and getting no gratitude.

That is why this thing is really misleading. From what he posted it makes it seem like it is for a year, when it looks pretty likely it is actually for 6 months. $US36k for 6 months is a decent wage. And from the expenses he has posted he doesn't sound like he is living all that frugally. Sounds like what his problem comes down to is more on the budgeting side. And what the heck is he insuring, that is a huge premium.
I do not disagree that writing often does not make business sense. But when he hits a great milestone of 2 million books, is decently well off because of it, and yet still complains instead of celebrating. I would certainly be resentful if I was a manga artist not him.

For starters, how about not publishing your works in shoujo/josei magazines to begin with, Mr. author of Nietzsche-sensei? Comic Gene is pretty much a flop of a magazine.
Most author nowadays, especially females avoid publishing their works in shoujo/josei magazines as they won't get much exposure + profit in doing that.

Well maybe because this is what they want to do? They doing it not for money nor fame (okay maybe someone does but majority doesn't)

I didn't mention those things myself, considering I don't know what the expenses in Japan are for those things(likely in Tokyo too). But yeah some of these, especially his insurance, strike me as pretty high. My house + car comes to roughly $2k per year here, so I'm not sure why he's spending so much!

Yeah, I agree with Aho-girl author here....
You pay taxes on your PREVIOUS year's income (outside of withholding but withholding wouldn't count on an app like that), and if he's paying $20,000 in taxes in Japan, that's an income of around $80,000, when you include local/state tax as well as federal tax. That's assuming he has no dependants or significant deductions, etc...
In any case to pay that much in taxes he is definitely pulling in more than $75K a year in revenue.
In the US, freelancers are required to pay estimated taxes throughout the year, but in Japan I believe that you just pay the entire year in one sum, which is why it looks like he's so much in the red during the months right after tax time.
Most manga-ka will look at that tax bill and be jealous.
BTW the insurance is almost certainly the national health insurance premium. Everyone is required to be insured, and if you don't have insurance through your employer you enroll in the National Health Insurance program. The premiums are based purely on your income the previous year, and cap out at around $750 per month for a single individual, so ~$9000 per year. It's set at about 6-8% your taxable income. So we can use this as well to reverse calculate his income from the previous year: ~$80,000-$100,000 dollars.
