Kurumada's been doing this for a good number of years, so I don't know why people still ask stuff like this. Kurumada does a run of ND for the fans, then does a run for something he wants to do (Otoko Zaka or the run he did for Indigo Period). I get that people want ND to finally finish, but at the same time I think Kurumada has more than earned the right to pace himself & work on what he wants when he wants. At least he has a more-or-less (conceptually) consistent schedule, which you can't say for the likes of Miura or Togashi. Anyway, what I think should be given more talk is the fact that Otoko Zaka moving over to Shonen Jump+ marks the first time in 25 years that a Kurumada manga will be serialized in a SJ-labeled "publication" (for lack of a better term for online serialization). I think it's ideal that Shueisha is making the manga available from the start right now, too, because now a new audience can get into Otoko Zaka, whereas the three new volumes that came out since the return in 2014 were obviously aimed at those who actually remembered the manga from back in the 80s. |

At least Togashi has enough made 300-something HxH hapters despite his many HxH hiatuses. If St. Seiya didn't get so popular, maybe the manga-ka would have spent more time decades ago working on this manga.

What? Kurumada had a ~30-year break between Otoko Zaka's Jump run & its return in 2014 because it was originally cancelled. It was a passion project for Kurumada & it didn't attract an audience back then, so he purposefully made Saint Seiya to appeal to the mainstream; Seiya rose from the ashes of Otoko Zaka's failure, in essence. If one wanted to be a cynical, sarcastic jerk, one could say that Kurumada sold himself out with Seiya, making something solely for the sake of being popular & financially successful, rather than make a manga that he wanted to make. Obviously that's not the case, but it's no exactly a falsehood, either. As for why Kurumada didn't return to Otoko Zaka after Seiya's initial finish, well there was the whole Silent Knight Sho debacle, which resulted in him leaving Shonen Jump, followed by him doing B't X for the rest of the 90s, and then Ring ni Kakero 2 during the 00s, alongside bringing back Saint Seiya with Next Dimension. Really, it wasn't until Kurumada truly established himself as a mangaka who could make whatever manga he wanted that he could even think about bringing back a passion project that filed during the early days of Jump's Golden Age. Look, I get that fans want Next Dimension to finally finish up, I really do. But at the same time I don't get the hatred people put towards Otoko Zaka simply because it exists. I'd rather Kurumada take the time to continue making a passion project of his, one that is now even being welcomed back to the Shonen Jump name with this new run, every now & then, than feel forced to make nothing but more Saint Seiya because the fans won't shut up about it & become disenfranchised with it in the process. Seriously, just take a look at the comments he gets on his website from the fans, with many sounding downright mean-spirited & rude, & it's sometimes a wonder that Kurumada even bothers to keep Next Dimension going, all things considered. |
