Great accomplishment. Takahashi is one of, if not the, greatest female mangaka IMO

She is actually the greatest female mangaka. There are only 4 manga authors who sold more volumes on entire world. And all of them are males.

- Masashi Kishimoto - Naruto (220 mln volumes)
- Akira Toriyama - Dragon Ball (240 mln volumes)
- Takao Saito - Golgo 13 (280 mln volumes)
- Eiichiro Oda - One Piece (406 mln volumes)

Rumiko Takahashi may very well end up being the most influential manga-ka ever. Whereas Tezuka basically influenced a whole generation of creators in Japan, Takahashi has sparked a similar influence throughout the whole world. Just about every title she's created has wound up becoming a classic, and their popularity has probably introduced more fans to anime and manga than anyone I can think of.

And while their work may be popular (even insanely popular), I don't think any of them have had quite as much an impact among fans as Takahashi has. Or are as universally recognizable as her creations are.

Yeah I've seen the numbers on wikipedia she's right up there with the top guys

prety sure all but the naruto one have.

Try to find even a single person who haven't heard about Dragon Ball.

Lopezz is right. Dragon Ball is easily the most recognized anime/manga title in the world (aside from Pokemon) even though One Piece is easily the best selling manga of all time

I'd kill for a new short stories of Maison Ikkoku (post-ending setting) anytime now. Really miss the folks.

I just felt the series didn't get as much love as the other series despite the unofficial label "one of the best romance manga" or "rumiko takahashi's masterpiece".

One thing that separates Ms. Takahashi from the men that outsell her is that all those guys sold a buttload of manga for ONE series. Takahashi's had, what, five long running series? And they've all been hits, not counting her slew of short stories that were also mostly damn good reads. I'm sure Takahashi could've rode the Urusei Yatsura train forever but she moved away from it and did a lot of other stuff in other genres.

Her stories aren't always perfect (Ranma ending made me want to pitch the book out the window) but when she hits she hits hard. (Maison Ikkoku ending made me forgive her for Ranma)
