Saw something about this on 4chan reserved judgement guess this makes it official that people were let go such is the reality of business sometimes I guess.

Yeah often when there are acquisitions and especially mergers, there are layoffs, so I don't see this as troubling, aside from for the employees involved. Hopefully they find somewhere to work in the industry.

Had a record year, yet felt the need to "restructure" and lose very important employees. Something is being played behind the scenes and that could lead to trouble.

Well given their new partnership with FUnimation a "Restructure" makes sense, you'd probably eliminate some position that are taken care of over there. For example wasn't CR looking to work on the dub market a bit, now that they have their relationship with Funi there's no reason for some of those jobs.
I don't want to speculate, it's unfortunate that some people have lost their jobs but that's the reality of things sometimes, they change.

I wouldn't read so much into it. The statement leads of by saying that they completed an acquisition that increased the size of the engineering team. In all likelihood, the company decided there were redundancies within their staff after the acquisition. It's unfortunate, but businesses aren't going to keep employees around if they don't have something for them to do, even if they are having a good year.

Like Greed1914 said, to eliminate redundancies. Say you have two companies that become one, either through merger or acquisition. Suddenly you would have multiple people working in the same job and you may not need that many in that position. You might be able to find work for them elsewhere in the company but most of the time, you just have to let one of them go as there isn't anything for them to do.

I'm sorry to hear this. Sorry for the 17 employees affected and also because I worry this might have an adverse effect on the Crunchyroll site, itself. Obviously, we outsiders don't know the full story or its implications but I know that a lot of companies are trying this wonderful little thing of "doing more with less." It means the amount of work is increasing but with fewer people to help so it puts added strain on those still with jobs. From a strictly, bloodless cold business point of view, I guess this is a "good" thing, but it reeks from a human standpoint.

It's not good from a business standpoint either since their product will degrade in quality due to stressed and overworked employees. of course that only if they are doing that "more with less" approach, as you said we don't know the details.

And for this reason, I consider a position of management as something to be declined regardless of the material compensation. If one can avoid a role in which one must make "difficult choices"—such a phrase being the quintessential smokescreen for injustice—then one will be all the better for it.

@Zin5ki Certainly a commendable attitude, though I think if everyone who thinks that way followed it, it would not better the situation. If those who would be pained by such a decision decline, that leaves such positions to those who would make such decisions indifferently or worse. I would rather the decision be made by one who is pained by it than one who savors it. Such a thing might not be bad for business but from a human standpoint...

Layoffs are almost unavoidable when dealing with acquisitions or mergers. Like other posters have said, you have to get rid of redundancy between the two. I just wonder how those layoffs were spread between the two companies. Hopefully it was equal positions from each and not all from Crunchyroll. Even if their job title is the same it's hard to replace a person who has been on the job and has experience. I just hope the quality does not suffer.
