Not particularly, no. RPGs like that always existed. The only difference is most of them never came to America until the PlayStation era. They've been around since NES though. -Stuart Smith |

Lol I own Thousand Arms and SSSC. And while a lot of jrpgs had fanservice aspects, very few of them were "look at this uguu girl's cleavage" as an entire premise. They don't even bother putting in male characters anymore. Even Thousand Arms, a literal dating sim rpg, had more substance than whatever this game is, neptunia, atelier waif, etc.
These titles are closer to interactive body pillows than actual games. |

I don't see how a female only cast is worse than one of those generic self insert friendly male MC's. At least this way you don't have to suffer through them all fawning over the male MC. There were plenty of PS1 era jrpgs with "uguu girl's cleavage" thrown at you the whole game btw. Your golden era of minimal fan service jrpgs is just in your head. |

-Stares at wall of suikoden, wild arms, grandia, front mission, level5 games, ys, early tales games, and non-Final Fantasy/KH squaresoft games- Stares at every jrpg to come out in the last five years. It has nothing to do with the lack of males and everything to do with how the girls are not female characters. They're objects to stared at. Times have changed. And it makes sense why. Games are expensive to make. The market for jrpgs has shrunk. The remaining market is mostly interested in moe girls doing moe things. Most series have died, and the ones that are still around have been steered towards that market. Fire Emblem's characters have gone from fully-clothed western fantasy to combat maids that you can pat and breed. Atelier has ditched RPG party/combat elements altogether and is now just girl interactions and crafting. Tales of X has always been aiming for mainstream animal appeal, but now all the characters are idol singers. Persona has changed the least, but that's because the times changed to suit it and not the other way around. Contemporary dating sim fantascifi was where the market was headed. There were a handful of "classic" jrpgs on the DS like Radiant Historia, but most were mediocre and probably vastly underperformed against games like Love+. And so instead of getting adventure stories about heroes doing stuff, we get Criminal Girls. So yes, times have changed. Skies of Arcadia(oh look, another mainstream, big-budget game with only minor fanservice, if any) would never be made in 2017. You don't sound intelligent by saying "lol its just you, everything is the same" |

As far as I can think, there hasn't been a magical-girl-themed RPG before, ever, though? As someone who loves the magcal girl genre, this looks great. Tbh I fnd the old-school RPGs everyone loves so much pretty generic.
It's a niche title by a niche studio with an audience of mostly girls. You can play literally any other game if you want a male MC. And dude, if you think like that, you're the problem. No one else is seeing them that way. Only you. Way to dismiss every other game Gust has released that have strong, proactive female MCs. Isn't that what everyone's been shouting about? I don't see how you can look at the plot of Blue Reflection game and say 'these characters have no personalities or goals of their own'. The mc throws herself into a dangerous, uncertain situation in order to get the thing she's most passionate about back, ballet. I would do the same in a situation where I was prevented from drawing.
Atelier has always been friendship interactions and crafting, since the 90's. The PS2 games are the exception, not the rule, and largely the least popular of the series (though I will agree, best). And besides the newest Atelier title is open world, how have they ditched the RPG combat and exploration elements at all? On an unrelated note, is it me, or has Mel Kisihida's anatomy drawing got worse...? |
