I see that they're trying to distance themselves from the anime/manga franchise...

How so? They're clearly paying homage to the franchise with nods to previous works & the plot is directly inspired by a episode from the anime.

Must be a really slow news days. How is this even news? A poster we already seen now has Japanese words.

He's probably referring to the fact that the film is being called Ghost in the Shell in Japan and not the actual Japanese franchise name Kokaku Kidotai, thereby establishing that it's technically not a Kokaku Kidotai movie. It's using the Americanized name, like if Hollywood ever makes that Gunnm movie and it gets called Battle Angel Alita in Japanese marketing.

I guess the people who made the film are not fluent Japanese speakers so they don't actually know the original film's name is different from a direct translation. Laughing I mean, I think most Japanese would associate the film with the franchise (although I don't know the degree of popularity of the GitS franchise in Japan, but the original manga was serialized in a seinen magazine that was the top circulating adult manga magazine in the country).

Isn't the title 'The Ghost in the shell' an original title of the manga along with kokaku-kidoutai ?

It used both with Kokaku Kidotai being the primary title for the manga but the 1995 film used Ghost in the Shell in English as its primary title.

The respect for the GitS series is respectable with top-quality CGI. But I worry that Scarlet's wooden acting will not do this movie justice, in spite of some good stunt work. That and they still cannot get Batou's eyes right. Razz

Let's be honest though - Ghost in the Shell is a MUCH cooler name than Kōkaku Kidōtai's direct translation. "Mobile Armored Riot Police"... yeesh, and they forgot to put Gundam in there also.

I'd say they probably left the title in Katakana/English to make clear that it's an originally English movie, as opposed to distancing the movie from the series. IIRC "Ghost in the Shell" was originally inspired by the book "Ghost in the Machine", so I think it's the more representative (and well-known) version of the title.
