A good analysis if not in great depth as I can't help bringing up a comparison to a film a previous commentator mentioned (I can't remember the name) where a girl in Japan and a boy in the US swap bodies during WWII. Also, conspicuously absent is reference to the spoiler[Great Earthquake and Tsunami of 2011] and how this film connects with public feelings relative to that. I personally believe that is what has propelled this film to the popularity it now enjoys. Also misses the connection to ancient Japanese mythology (Musubi I think) and customs currently popular too.

Edit: The spoiler reveals nothing, I thought it was vague enough and has no details. People can see it on kissanime which I think is legal.

Stop increasing my anticipation! It's taking every ounce of my being not to simply watch this online. Mad When I see it for the first time I want it to be on a giant theater screen in its full visual glory! Gah, it just looks so good. I think I'll go through his older films to satiate me for the time being.

It is driving me nuts that some countries outside of Japan are already showing this film in their theatres but no announcements have been made regarding the release date in North America. Hurry the F UP!

Lots of promo, and now a review. The level of anticipation for this has been on simmer far more than I care for. Way to torture me. Thanks ANN!

Good to see his hard work paying off for him though. He deserves it.

@Hiroki not Takuya: spoiler["Also, conspicuously absent is reference to the Great Earthquake and Tsunami of 2011 and how this film connects with public feelings relative to that. I personally believe that is what has propelled this film to the popularity it now enjoys."

You are very right about this. However, I considered this to be too much of a spoiler to include in the review of a film that most people haven't had the chance to see yet - even if it's not rocket science to deduce this before the film confirms it. That's why I'm putting this reply in spoiler tags, and I think it would be beneficial for you to add them to your post as well to avoid disappointing people. - Anne]

Ditto here. This film has been high on my must-see list since I first heard about it.

It would be a really nice present to get a release for the upcoming holidays, even if it were one of those limited special releases in select theaters.

I love his work but I never got the appeal of body swap story so this might be his first movie that I skip on. I always find the character react in unnatural way since they always end up trying to hide the switch for some reason instead of looking for help. The unrealism of there reaction combined with the unrealism of the basic premise makes it really hard to relate to anyone and the emotional aspect just fall flat for me.

I saw your name. at AX and I loved it. It was easily the best Shinkai movie I've seen (I still need to get to Garden of Words, Children who Chase Lost Voices and The Place Promised in our Early Days) and I'll definitely be buying it once Funimation gets around to releasing it.

The body swapping aspect was actually handled really well and it never felt like the characters were acting unrealistically. It's worth watching if you like Shinkai's other work.

I unabashedly love Shinkai's films, though I would be lying if I didn't grow apprehensive when I realised that body-swapping was to be a central plot device. Perhaps I simply find the notion a little frightening.
My position is that the cathartic tug of a Shinkai production is at its strongest when high concepts are used only to frame and situate his characters' amorousness, rather than to impose upon them and thus to dictate their very actions. Despite this concern, I still owe it to myself to watch this work and relish it to any degree that I can.

My hope is that Theron is assigned to review the inevitable on-disc release for this film. To him I owe my appreciation for this director, and I would value his input when finalising my appraisal of the work in question.

So... Basically you don't like around 99% of anime? Since most of it is pretty unrealistic in one way or another. Laughing

It's the combination of them that's the problem, you can explore normal people psych in unrealistic situation if you have realistic character. You can explore real premise/situation trough unrealistic character.

Both of them together is just random faffing around, so unless the comedy is top nosh (wish isn't what Shinkai is know for) or the animation/visual are fantastic (which there is limited opportunity to do in a real life setting) there's little reason to go.

So where can I watch this movie legally in North America? I keep hearing about it and had obviously already planned on watching it because it's directed by Makoto Shinkai.

Well, I personally found this film to be pretty damn good. It's not my favorite Shinkai film, but I did enjoy it. While I love realistic characters and stories, it's not always necessary for me to enjoy or care for a character.

Nowhere yet. Funimation licensed it, but they haven't released it yet and probably won't until after its theatrical run in Japan ends.

I'm not really sure what to think after this review. Based on the massive box-office response it's seeing in Japan, I was hoping that this film represented Shinkai expanding beyond his usual playbook to something broader, but from the sound of things it's more of the same, which makes me wonder why it in particular has resonated much more strongly with audiences than his earlier works. I mostly tired of Shinkai's shtick after his first few films, and after the underwhelming experience I had with 5 cm/s, I never even bothered to watch his last two offerings. That being said, he does excel at creating very pretty environments, so that alone could make the experience worthwhile.

This sentence from the review also stuck out to me:

Quote:
It sure is hard to be a teenager, with emotions heightened to a level that makes even ordinary life feel unbearable at times. It's also one of the most beautiful times in life, full of indescribable yearning and longing for connection, something Makoto Shinkai always has a lot to say about.

I know I'm probably something of an exception, but that doesn't really mesh with my high school years in the least. It took me until college, or even afterwards, to really hit those emotional depths and become the person I am today. Quite frankly, I'd qualify most of what goes on at the high school level as "puppy love." That's one of the main reasons I'm so frustrated with anime's long-standing infatuation with that particular time period. It's not the "best days of your life," and at the end of the day I don't find it particularly interesting.
