Hooray Beautiful Dreamer on Blu-ray!!

I.hope it sells well enough for the first film to be licence as well.

The, er, FIVE other features (and yeah, the third one's not so bad either, just as a representative of the Kazuo Yamazaki phase of the series) are in the gray area of what used to belong to AnimEigo, and for what even they can't Kickstarter anymore.

Which puts it in the same question of the TV show and OVA's, who's got it, who can even re-license it, and whether or not they still can.
Dreamer always escaped, as just the one movie was a CPM license, meaning it was freed up enough to be re-released and air on Sci-Fi Channel, and still be remembered more widely than everything Bob Woodhead kept in his garage.

Beautiful Dreamer had better be in 16:9. Just sayin'. Evil or Very Mad

Can't imagine why it wouldn't be, but I couldn't understand why the 2004 release wasn't in 16:9, either.

Other than that, very happy to hear about this and will triple dip for it. Now, if they could also get the OVAs, I'd be very happy.

The TV show- and the other movies- can stay on DVD. I'm not against a re-release, I just don't need one myself.

Before Viz redubbed Sailor Moon, I would have said that.

But if you've ever watched the auditions on AnimEigo's disks when they first tried to imagine Lum, Ataru and Mendou's voices for the first-movie dub, you realize how far we've come in the voice actor industry's natural sense for how to dub comedy anime:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0gZA7G2OgE
How many tries did it take AE to realize Lum didn't need a "strange accent" like in the manga? CPM didn't know the series, just dubbed the movie by ear, and got most of the voices perfect on the first go.
(Ryunosuke still sounds like a tomboyish girl, though, and Shinobu sounds like a catty-mean girl because that's the only dialogue scenes she gets, but there wasn't as much of their backstories in the movie.)

The Viz of today could dub the TV series properly for the first time. Whether they WOULD, OTOH, with an "old" series that long, and after getting through Maison again, is the problem of their being Viz. Confused
Would be nice to have it in "season" boxsets, though, would free up a lot of shelf space.

Much like Final Fantasy 4, look like there's another Urusei Yatsura Movie 2 I'll happy buy.

I did just started to think about that movie too.

I highly recommend checking out Arcadia of My Youth (one of the best Harlock Universe anime made so far) for those new to Harlockverse lore.

It's only a matter of time until we hear about when or if Arcadia of My Youth's sequel T.V. series (Arcadia of my Youth: Endless Road SSX) will arrive on Region 1 English sub DVD/Blu-ray.

I hope it's better than Harlock Saga. Harlock barely did anything in that. Tochiro does all the work.

Finally happy to have Arcadia of My Youth to be out on Blu-Ray. I don't care for the other titles that much (I only seen bits of Urusei Yatsura and it was not too bad). There are other titles I hope for Discotek to pick up. Here is a list of anime I wish for Discotek to release:

Android Kikaider: The Animation
Baoh
Battle Royal High School (The old DVD looks like a bad VHS tape that was ripped on to a DVD)
Call Me Tonight
Genocyber (I will be happy to get rid of my old DVD copy for a new remaster copy)
Hell Teacher Nube
Jushin Liger
The King of Braves GaoGaiGar
Record of Lodoss War (Media Blasters never give us the Blu-Ray release)
Midori
Perfect Blue (The other countries have it on Blu-Ray expect for the US)
Ultraman Joneus (The Ultraman)
Wolf's Rain

There are titles that never been release outside of VHS like Twilight of the Cockroaches, Ogre Slayer and Psycho Diver: Soul Siren. Still waiting for Great Mazinger, Devilman OVA's, Kekko Kamen and Devil Lady to get pick by Discotek Media as well.

Beautiful Dream, the only Urusei Yatsura film I haven't seen as it was out of print when I was watching the Anime Eigo DVDs... and the one I most want. To see, to own, to have, to hold...

Give me the date, I'll throw some money on it. At it, around it maybe?

5 cms per second though? A beautiful tease of a movie that I not only don't want to see again, I don't even want to think it still exists.

It's not--It's the origin story, so Harlock does even less.
IIRC, it's all about his days as another struggling Earthman after the takeover, his friendship with Toshio, some ruminations about antique flying, and we don't see him as the badass Captain until the last fifteen or twenty minutes of the two-hour-plus-plus-plus 70's/80's Rintaro movie.

Back before the series started streaming, I kept wanting to find some examples of the story, and all I'd kept finding was pretentious offshoot stories like THIS.

I seem to remember hearing on a podcast, a rep from CPM saying it was cheaper at the time to reuse the old composite master than license the 16:9 version Toho was offering. Now that the license has switched hands in NA, it'll most likely be 16:9 like the European releases.

I would like to see Space Battleship Yamato get pick up. We have Star Blazers that can be stream on Manga Entertainment's Youtube channel, but it would be nice to have the original uncut Japanese to be watch in the US.

Based Discotek is about to release an anime here that Mike Toole calls bad. Chargeman Ken doesn't seem that bad, but only one way to find out!

I'd love for it to get a new English dub if it gets released (though I'd settle for sub-only). Unfortunately, Voyager doesn't want to make money.

penguin: Well, this version of Island of Assassins will have a better A/V job. Also, Voyager has stated they only have Star Blazers and the movies, not Yamato.

Zin: Angel's Egg is in some Kafka-esque licensing quagmire, allegedly.

SQUEE!

Arcadia? Beautiful Dreamer? More Lupin? And the truly baffling Chargeman Ken? I swear, this press release is like it was made for me. I am beyond thrilled about all of these. These are all preorder/day 1 purchases for me. Thanks for continuing to be awesome, Discotek!

It's not exactly "bad." Chargeman Ken is more incompetent, and unintentionally hilarious. It has a nonsensical plot, it's barely animated, the sound effects are missing half the time, the music is almost always the same repeated loop, and things happen with no logical reasoning. It's become a bit of a cult favorite because of these things. One particular episode ("Dynamite in the Brain") was fansubbed and made the circuit in conventions for a couple years, and I'd guess that its popularity there is probably one of the reasons Discotek picked it up. The best analogy I can think of is it's like an animated version of a Fletcher Hanks/Hank Fletcher comic.
