You should have made #4 before the new Godzilla film. I am somewhat indifferent as to how it ends, as long as Shinji ends with Asuka (again).

Someone know why it's such a drag for him to work on Eva? It's been 4 years and he' just now starting to feel up to the task of working on the final film?

So... film in 2018 and a release from Funimation in 2022, if they want to pull a 3.33 on us again.

Nice. Can't wait to wait some more.

This franchise has completely trashed the man, emotionally speaking.
I don't blame him, the original came out during a really dark period for him- only to cop abuse through the final episodes from fans. I can't imagine it'd be terribly pleasing to revisit that all this time later with even more pressure to "get it right".
He's pretty much backed into a corner by this point, if he works on the final film it's going to take one hell of a toll, and if he screws it up he'll be eaten alive by fans. If he drops it he'll forever regret leaving it unfinished and again, be eaten alive by fans.

Since I appreciate his first effort re NGE at age 68 I have to be pragmatic re Evangelion 4.44 release in my life span. Anno......I don't care. It's your story, your life, take as much time as you need to reconstruct all of that.

Currently awaits the Second Coming. Odds are better I'll / we'll see Him / Her on a grassy knoll or hill top before we see 4.44 at a theater near you.

Eva is really personal to Anno and he puts an absurd amount of time and effort into it, and it shows. I feel like 3.0 has been his most personal work, and seeing the reception was really deflating. Godzilla was his way of clearing his head.

IDK, the character design and the "Theatrical" sub track were pretty great.

Because of people like Penguintruth that somehow actually manage for there visceral messages actually manage to reach him, if I daily received hate and death threats because "you ruined the franchise" it would kill my creative buzz.

Hell, End of Eva had its own backlash in its release, it is unclear if this is some sort of avant-garde attempt to recreate the reaction so the Rebuild Finale being incomprehensible will be a must if that is Anno's true intention.

Although we can still take bets on which will come out first, a Hollywood Evangelion release or Anno's finale.

If an artist can't take shit from his audience maybe he shouldn't be in the arts ? 3.33 is the absolute worst Evangelion chapter in the whole franchise. It cannot be defended on any level. That is the reason why Anno quited Evangelion and went on to do more interesting challenging projects. He doesn't give a shit about Eva anymore, and he told the audience as much in 3.33. A pity most fans really didn't get the message.

Did you two even read the article? It literally answers the question and explains why he didn't do 4 before getting on Godzilla:

Quote:

"To me, Evangelion is my soul; it is a work that scrapes off bits of my soul. The previous work, Evangelion Shin Gekijōban: Q [Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo], scraped me down until I wasn't able to make anything anymore." Anno confessed that he felt, "saved" by the opportunity to work on Godzilla: Resurgence

While I didn't find 3.0 to be all that good on it's own, I really liked the direction it took the series, and I'm really looking forward to 4.0 because of it. Glad Anno's finally getting back to finish the series, and it's good to see the time away from Eva has been good for him.

Artists are at their best if they don't care about reception. I hope Anno continues to do what he wants to do at his pace and doesn't worry about what fans say. And I very much hope he continues to work on anime after Evangelion. He's already spent too much time on it, and should rather focus on something new.

Like the Animator Expo which was one of the greatest things that happened to anime recently.

I do agree that Eva 3.33 was a disappointment and forgettable. The build up from the first two films was incredible, the story was riding up to a fantastic climax and (hopefully) resolution, but the sequel didn't make any sense to me.

I fail to understand why fans feel compelled to crucify him over it. I've never understood how so many people can feel so pissed off about a work of fiction that they would personally harass it's creator over it. But I guess I can understand why they would be upset to begin with.

I actually like some aspects of 3.3... granted I've also hated Anno as a director (not as a person) since the sixth episode of Gunbuster. In 3.33 Rei started developing as a character... she didn't get that far but hey it's a start. Kaoru trying to stop Shinji made for a pretty cool scene. Finally the last scene of Asuka caring just a tiny bit about Shinji was favorite scene because it showed that her character had grown a bit after 20 years of being an angsty jerk with a tragic backstory. The animation was good and I liked the character and mech designs.

So yeah that's about it for good things to say about 3.33 unless anyone else has anything.

If the last Rebuild film ends in a confusing manner like the TV series and End of Evangelion, we're done goofed.
