If nothing else, the fact they need to make it about "Snake Eater" and re-use the existing characters rather than making something truly original is a tacit acknowledgement that they can't come up with a good idea without Hideo Kojima on board. At least, not yet.

...or perhaps the other characters are tied up in legal rights limbo. Either way, it would be bad for Konami.
Not that I expect much good to come out of this.

Konami was dead to me after Kojima was no longer there. Capcom is Monster Hunter away from joining them as far as I'm concerned.

It's a pachi slot game based off an original ip why would they need to make something original?

I find it hilarious how dramatically they're playing this up to be. No gameplay videos, but then again, is that necessary for pachislot? (Then again, I was wrong about some cousins of pachinko, so I can be wrong about this too--but it's a gambling machine out-and-out, and any strategy would be gaming the system, which the designers would try their best to eliminate.)
It must be quite eyecatching in a pachinko parlor though, to have these huge screens next to each other like this. TVs are also measured in inches in Japan too?

Legal Rights? Konami owns all of it.

So true. But it seems that Konami is simply leading with the most popular installment for pachinko.
Silent Hill 2 = the most popular entry = pachinko
MGS3 = the most popular entry = pachinko
The only exception was Castlevania which looked like it got something somewhat original.
We'll probably see the others in due time.

Konami´s profit margin greatly increased after the shake up, so they arguable did the "right" thing, despite morally reprehensible practices. A shame that the entire drama managed to sour Phantom Pain´s quality for longtime fans (as me) but Kojima finally moved one. The true victim is thus Silent Hill.

What did they do? Make it run 30 FPS, Number it as a sequel when it was really a prequel, port it to the 3DS for no discernible reason?

A lot of people think that's due to MGSV's extremely strong sales though. The real test will be when we see their earnings after this fiscal year and if their investments away from video games worked out for them.
