So, I'm a little behind the times and have just recently gotten around to watching Nodame and have been loving it. The music is wonderful. I finished the anime the other day, and wondered if anyone with some sort of classic training could give me some input re: the performances in the show.

Basically, my ear isn't trained enough to really hear if there are any substantial changes in the "versions" of the performances that the different orchestras are going through. Namely, are they really "improving", or is the soundtrack basically the same whether or not they're still learning their parts versus when they're giving their final performance?

And how much do different "personalities" actually come across in the different performance styles? The show makes note of how people such as Nodame or Mine(?- the violinist whose father owns the Chinese Restaurant) are playing very "sloppy". What does this really mean? I'm just trying to get a grip on how to really listen to some of this music.

In the live action version (which I'm about 1/3 the way through), they really seem to emphasize more strongly just how bad the S-orchestra is before Chiaki helps conduct them. At first, they're so bad, even I can tell the difference. It didn't seem so blatantly off-key in the anime version. Does this seem true to others?

From what I read, I don't have classic training, the music in Nodame Cantabile (anime) is average, and if someone like the music then should rather look for recordings made by better orchestra.

I read that what Nodame is doing is close to musical genius, but she makes mistakes. When Chiaki is technically better. But how I said I don't have classic training so I can't be sure if it is true.

I watched all of the live action and a fair amount of the anime, though I eventually stopped with that because I wasn't enjoying it half as much as I enjoyed the drama.

I can't really say much about your question about the music, but hopefully someone else can because I've wondered the same thing myself.

I haven't watched the show past episode 2, but my best guess is that "sloppy" is referring to lack of musical detail: in a nutshell, not playing musically and lacking the musical substance which brings the piece to life (what distiguishes a human player from a MIDI player). Usually this is considered much worse than say, a couple of wrong notes.

It could also refer to wrong notes, playing too fast or too slow, not in tune, wrong rhythms, etc., but I think if that were the case Nodame or whoever would definitely know and don't need anyone to tell them (it's also kind of pointless to point out technicalities). It's one thing to play the notes correctly and have the technical capabilities of playing the instrument, but the practice of actually making music out of what you are capable of playing is a much more subtle, difficult, and subjective thing, and is what really makes music what it is.

This post got me interested in the anime a few weeks ago and I finally looked for it tonight, so I guess, Thank you, is in order =).

I'd love to be able to say I have an amazing and well trained ear because this would be an interesting thing to listen for, but I don't and it's tough. I've only seen the first episode so far. When they both sit down together for the first time it's obvious she hits a wrong note and then both of them lose time with eachother when they try to continue playing. But when he starts complaining about her "stinking", because he forced her to play it properly, it was hard to say if anything truly changed that I could hear.

Was quite a good player in high school and did well with music theory with my teacher there, but gave it up afterwards now in college(the amount of practice and work to make anything is beyond me..).

I'll just listen more, doubt I'll pick up anything, but you sure have an interesting question here. I'm just glad I picked this anime up.

*Edit* After watching the second episode: When you hear the Sonata on the cd versus the final play through with Mine and Chiaki, it does seem like he's playing with "the spirit of youth and lightning". It sounds as if the strings are being played a bit harsher and louder as well. The repeating pattern on the violin part 1-2-3-2, where 1 is low and 3 is high(I don't know how to "type" sounds without referring to notes..), he's stringing the 1 very loudly while in the cd Chiaki lets Nodame listens to it's completely different. Each 1-2-3-2, or the slight variations, rises and drops in volume each time(crescendo/decrescendo) as well as the noted "lighter touch" on the violin. Mine however is playing each phrase of that similar and somewhat stale. Sounding more like a copy of the first time he played the four notes where as in the cd each set is slightly different. This part I'm describing is around 14:40 and 19:30, each comparison

The first time Nodame plays her piano part with Chiaki listening, when he yells at her, it seems like she's taking a lot of liberties. Her stop and gos, not quite rhythmically consistent and since I'm not looking at the music I can't tell but it seems she's playing more of the line rather than accompaniment. Example being a bass guitar in a band but in the middle you decide to improv and start to play the singer's melody line. Again though, can't be sure on that.

Basically it seems like every time Chiaki plays something it just comes out more refined. As said before, "sloppy" and the type of images you'd get from that, is the best way to describe the faults he has with these characters(atleast this early into the anime).

That short edit turned out a lot longer Smile Anyway, I'm going to refrain looking into it so deeply because while it is fun, I miss music, I don't want to constantly be picking it apart. I could be very wrong on some of this but it's the best I can do.

I watched this anime twice over and got all the albums for the orchestras and classical music as well. As far as i can tell, in the anime, when a particular piece begins, until it ends, they never really had any improvements. But i'm guessing the live-action has a better way of putting this.

I don't have a trained ear but i did listen to the music over and over and watched the anime a lot of times.

By the way, does anyone know of other anime that deals with the music genre? Like beck for instance?
