None of these choices are undeserving of their places here, but surely Metropolis, which Katsuhiro Otomo helped to produce prior to Steamboy, is equally deserving of a place in this list. If I may be so humble as to ask, did the former contain too many petroleum engines or art-deco motifs to qualify?

Sakura Wars, and possibly Steel Angel Kurumi, would fit on that list.
Steam Detectives seems like it should, but it is in my backlog and I have not watched it yet.

The only one on the list that I have seen is Castle in the Sky.
Samurai Gun is also in my backlog.

Last Exile was the first show that came to my mind.

The strongest kid is pretty obviously one of the Dragon Ball characters.

Therefore I voted for Illya.

I assume putting Castle in the Sky on the list is to automatically stand in for the first season of Nadia.

But just because Steamboy advertises it in the title is no reason to give Sherlock Hound such a low place on the list...At least it got the article picture.

I'd replace FMA with Last Exile. The former is already popular enough that it doesn't need the spotlight, and it's also not nearly as grounded into the steampunk genre as Gonzo's best work.

Definitely a snub.

Last Exile was already mentioned, then Samurai 7 would be my second choice on the list.

And strongest kid, definitely Arale, she breaks the Earth in half come on.

There was an 4-part OVA which was released at about the same time in English as Green Legend Ran, with steam-powered mecha traveling on train(obviously steam-powered as well). I can't quite recall the name of if though...?

Also, as was already mentioned, Steam Detectives, fits this trope to the t. But I recommend the manga, or what volumes of it are available(Viz only released 8 of 13 volumes). The anime doesn't, and really can't, do justice to Asamiya's style...

Could it have been the Sakura Wars OVA?

So Last Exile doesn't make the list? What's with that?

@Touma

Just recalled the name, it was Kishin Heidan. Not four episodes but seven(but released on 4 tapes).

I'll continue to beat on the dead horse. Last Exile really should be on the list.

Not exactly steam, since it's some magical impossible engine, but I've always seen Giant Robo as fitting into that steampunk description. Then you have a whole subset of anime that have sort-of-magic that powers vehicles and other industry but it's never really described, like in El-Hazard, Photon, Escaflowne, or Windaria. They're settings with magic and science, and while they edge near fantasy they're never fully sword and sorcery. There's just sort of "stuff" that makes things work.

Someone mentioned Green Legend Ran, which means Origin: Spirits of the Past needs to be as well, since it heavily aped off that OVA and Nausicaa.

If it counts, Steel Angel Kurumi did feature androids who operate on a mystic power of some sort.
