Don't get the wrong idea from that synopsis; this 2011 series is apparently more of a romantic comedy than a supernatural horror story. Our coverage is mostly limited to an Anime Spotlight preview, but you can check the show out for yourself on Funimation and Hulu.

It's a pretty decent balance of both, actually. People tend to give up on it too quickly to get to the darker parts of the story.

Terror in Resonance became a trainwreck by the end, and I'm totally baffled as to what people see in it. So good at the start, so wonky by the end.

Don't blame the audience. That infamous first episode was disastrous at encouraging folks to hang around. It thankfully got a lot better after that but by then it was far too late.

On a different note, Shelf Life seems a little barren with only one review per week.

First episode wasn't bad per say, just pretty standard romcom stuff.

For any series I think bailing after 1 episode isn't the best choice. Can you imagine everyone giving up on Higurashi or Madoka after one episode?

I personally give a show a 3 episode trial.

Even if the show's political ambitions might leave you feeling a little cold, the pure storytelling on display is almost always enough to pull you along all the same.

Did they entirely redo the story when they release the DVD for TiR? I know sometime they redo the animation of badly done sequence when releasing anime on physical format, so maybe TiR got the same treatment, lord knows it needed one. From the next part:

Being only eleven episodes long, Terror in Resonance speeds along at a breakneck pace

I'm guessing that means they also remove the mid section with five and made something useful out of it, because that was pretty much filler.

In all seriousness, I think terror in resonance is the anime equivalent of a Trump or Sanders political rally. If you go in expecting anything others than anger and blame, like fact grounded in reality or example that demonstrate and carry a message without having to be distorted, you'll be disappointed.

A lot of people did give up on Madoka. They came back because everyone still watching was yelling at the top of their lungs "YOU GOTTA COME BACK AND SEE THIS". Gonna guess C3 doesn't get good enough to inspire that reaction.

That is one heck of a collection. I can't even imagine having that many physical volumes of manga, lol. I try to buy digitally when i can, mostly just to save space. Very nice Smile

I thought Terror in Resonance fell apart right around when Five was introduced. She needlessly complicated the plot and I felt like it achieved nothing as it bit off more than it could chew at that exact moment somehow. I don't think it's quite the train wreck that others do (I still found it compellingly watchable), but it definitely turned out to be average in the end and not really worth it, but also not so bad that I'd actively tell people to burn every copy they come across.

@merxamers
Yeah, having that much physical manga is not easy, I dread moving. I'm actually having to sell some things, I really want/need the space and am just plain done with some things (I have a thread over on the sales page, most of the stuff I wanna sell is up on eBay, but I always cut better deals on here, no eBay fees or whatnot). That wasn't my goal that I set out to achieve when I first started collecting though, not at all! Of course, my damn comic shop has half off sales all the time so hooray! MORE COMICS AND MANGA! happens like, twice a month. So I haven't paid full price for anything in ages (it's really damn rare)

As for how much of it is unread, yeah, I'm working on it. That's about the best I can say on that, lol. One of my friends asked me that (he was polite and was all "don't be offended"), and I was like "HA! no." But I really do want to kill the majority of that backlog one day! I've rearranged things to help me work on it too.

Also, I like to take really detailed pics of most of the shelves, so that everyone can actually see what's on it. I dislike it when I'm going "is that that series, or...." so I tried to avoid that as much as possible on my end.

And for anyone curious, yes, I do have at least one version of every Tezuka manga that has been printed in English (now that Storm Fairy and Crime & Punishment have arrived)! That is what it looks like in physical form, for anyone curious! And just assume that I will give DMP all Tezuka monies in the future too.

So is Terror in Resonance just going to be one of those: critics love it, audience don't?

From what I know that's quite rare in the anime fandom. Are there any other examples?

Wow, I don't normally use the word, but he Ressonance of Terror shilling is getting a little out of hand. The only reason it has a "neck breaking pace" is because they wasted 3-4 episodes on Five, a character that was basically useless in the story. Also, the simple fact that these "terrorists" don't even hurt, let alone kill anyone is preposterous. I understand why they don't, because they wanted them to be likable, but it's really stupid. "genuine political treatise", I'd love anyone to try and elaborate on that one, because I sure as heck didn't see it. Also, the characters were a joke, with only one of the boys having an actual personality at all. Look, the show did many things right: the animation was amazing, and looked gorgeous, the directing and camera work were also fantastic, as was the music. But there is nothing behind it. It's a story about two people who are completely unrelatable and also unlikeable. This show is very flawed, and that's OK, but for some reason it keeps getting sung like it's the second coming of Bebop. Even its flaws are being written about here in the most apologetic way possible. Please, stop.

Oh lord yes, the dreaded backlog. I've gotten a bad habit of buying more than i have time to watch/read, so i sympathize completely (at the same time having 2 brothers bugging me to watch Breaking Bad, Vikings, and Naruto). I swear i'll get to it all, someday....

I'm still somewhat impressed that zac wasn't gushing over this one, the answer to your question is:
"Outside of knowing it was the latest work from famed director Shinichiro Watanabe"

Take his name off of it, and it drops precipitously.

HeeroTX, you shouldn't be surprised. From what I've read and heard from Zac, he's the type of person that will want something to be good (for example this), but will tear into it if it turns out it wasn't good. I think Zac wanted to like it. In my experience, the more I want to like something, the more pissed off I get when it turns sour.

Flowers of Evil and YuriKuma Arashi spring to mind. Any show without a near-exclusive focus on Overt Plot and linear character development tends to alienate the broader anime fanbase, at least in my experience.

In addition to YuriKuma Arashi last year also gave us Maria the Virgin Witch. At least, both of those shows performed better among ANN's critics than they did in the user vote. Interestingly, just like Terror in Resonance, both of those shows were by very prominent directors (wanted to say "auteur directors", but I'm not sure how well that applies to Taniguchi) and both of them flopped in terms of disc sales. From a bit earlier, I think Ping Pong might also be an example.

I made the mistake of looking through your sales before having to forcefully remind myself that I'm moving in a few months. The struggle is too real! I've got 4 large bookcases and one smaller one that are all stuffed right now, with a bunch of manga starting to get stacked up since I've run out of space in the shelves...moving is going to be so awful. But once I move I can finally buy myself some nice new shelves for my manga and for my figures that are all currently boxed away (fingers crossed for glass cases...)
