{Edit}: I'm sorry but "sigh" is simply not acceptable as a post. That's going even beyond a pointless one-liner post. You gotta give some sort of opinion when posting beyond simply "sigh". Thank you. ~ Psycho 101

Well that was a really cool interview. Some really great questions and answers about perceptions in Japan that I don't think many people get, and even those who do probably still stand to learn something from this.

What an ambiguous sigh! On-topic, it's always enlightening to read articles like this; part of me can't help but wonder if the timing of the first episode of Gaycation (taking place in Japan) is coincidental. I do hope they manage to get their film made--I tend to find most information about gay/lesbian manga and/or anime gets filtered through the lens of a straight creator. :/ |

That was a really great and informative interview. I wish them the best of luck.

This was a fascinating read, I might have to put a bit towards that kickstarter myself. I've always been interested in gay culture in Japan, I've always felt confused about their attitudes towards LGBT people in general.

Funeral Parade of Roses is a great film.
Good luck to them. With one week to go, though, I'm not sure they'll be reaching that funding goal. Hopefully they'll still put something out. After VICEs Gaycation turned out to be less about being gay in other countries & more about Ellen Page being gay in other countries, I'd like to see something along these lines. |

Definitely an interesting read and the interviewees seem very well-spoken and knowledgeable. I like how they made sure to avoid the "West vs Japan" type thinking when comparing gay rights and culture. This was one of the most informative things on the topic I've read in awhile. I might pick up a shirt and copy of Mentaiko's Priapus from their site
One problem I have would be the broad use of "queer" which many lgbt+ people hate to be categorized under for a multitude of valid reasons (its origin as a slur being the biggest).
More evidence that "tolerance" is still a broken, malign and or dangerous substitute for actual acceptance. EDIT: fixed formatting Last edited by Savion on Mon Mar 07, 2016 5:58 pm; edited 1 time in total |

(Even if Mentaiko's art is so great, Priapus is pretty much only porn with a minimal scenario, compared to his other mangas) I've been a fan of MASSIVE since they announced The Passion of Gengoroh Tagame. I had so much trouble finding it in stores near me, that now I pretty much only order them on Amazon. I've got every Bruno Gmunder's Gay Manga release, and I'm quite proud of it. This interview was really interesting to read, I kind of feel bad that I can't really contribute to the kickstarter, I would really love that. I still haven't got a copy of the Cretan Bull or even What Is Obscenity, it would have been a great way to get them. |

I remember the Tokyo Rainbow Pride video posted in an Answerman article last month. I enjoyed the interviews so much that I was a bit sad that the video ended so soon. Everyone seemed like they were having a good time at the event and it was nice to learn about actual experiences in Japan.
This article was also very informative with a helpful section about other films to check out. I would really like more character studies in general, since I think documentaries and films tend to emphasize people who do not identify as heterosexual or within the gender binary are tragic victims too often. I am likewise glad to hear about other upcoming projects from them. Last edited by horseradish on Mon May 04, 2020 4:08 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Japan, the U.S. and Israel are the only developed countries where attitudes towards homosexuality are conservative. Israel is one thing. Judaism. The U.S. is another. Christianity. But Japan's problem? I thought atheists tolerated homosexuality?

Very interesting. I hope this project does well.
Many years ago an alumnus of the school I work at asked me about gay culture in Japan. I responded that as a straight, white, U.S. raised guy my knowledge was very weak. However I told him I'd see if I could find any useful information for him. I am a librarian after all and helping to find information is a big part of what we do. That search led me to the excellent writings of Mark McLelland and I passed the info to him, and now do so to you. http://works.bepress.com/mmclelland/ |

Like said before, Japanese aren't atheist. (Well, in general) Most of homophobia comes from Europeans, where they pushed their thoughts to other countries. That's pretty much the case for almost everywhere else, sadly. |

I think I can speak for a lot of people like myself in the LGBT+ spectrum, that we are fine with fellow queer folk using the term as an 'aggressive reclaim' similaer to how many POC have reclaimed.....THAT word. The N one. The one I dare not utter because it makes my brain feel like mud.....so from that perspective I can understand but respectfully disagree on the use of the term 'queer'. Horses for courses and all! |
