He did a great job on Boardwalk Empire, so now I'm even more interested in this film.

Didn't realize they were basing this on the more procedural SAC instead of the philosophical original...now I'm even more disappointed.

Things looked grim before, but now they look as dark as a black hole.
First, Scarlet Johanson, a fine acctress for my tastes, getting the role as Motoko... that's just so wrong... even with thousands of layers of makeup. Then, they tell us they will adapt The Laughing Man incident... can't they see it's too complex for a hollywood movie? So I'm guessing it's just going to be a chase against the angry hacker or something. Well, it's not like they'd be even remotely able to attempt to adapt even a portion of the original manga, they were smart, surprisingly, on this one. Now they list The Laughing Man as some middle aged dude (with all due respect to the actor)... really? The Laughing Man had, if I remember correctly, a full prosthetic body that looked like a late teen, which also nearly ever appears throughout the series except at the very end, and during a visit to some psychiatric for children, in which the viewer doesn't know he is the laughing man. Are they taking this even remotely seriously? or are they just getting some famous actors to sell the movie? I guess the obvious answer is the later, but I can't help but rant about a movie from a franchise I love, in an attempt to get whoever is doing all this weird stuff to fix it, even if it's all too late for that. |

Sound awfully pretentious.....makes sense why they'd based it off of Stand Alone Complex. |

Michael Pitt did great work on Boardwalk Empire - he was many people's favorite character. I'm excited to see him in this, even though the actual description of the character here is a bit off-putting for GitS fans.

Great news!
I have faith in this project. Somehow. After getting the amazing Edge of Tomorrow; this might turn out decent! I have no problem in thwm tweaking and updating the story a bit. Scarlette Johansson will not put on yellow face. Don't you guys worry. |

As good as he was in Boardwalk, his performance as Verger in the Hannibal show was better. So friggin' creepy.

It doesn't have to be like the anime (any version of it), as long as it's good on it's own. The Laughing Man plotline was my favorite from SAC and I can see them pulling off a modified version of it based on the current setup. It's obvious that they're not doing a straight adaptation of GITS, but no version has and it always turns out well anyway. I just don't see much point in complaining about it before they've even started shooting. |

This movie is so far along in pre-production, it's pretty much a done deal at this point. Look at all the crew members listed on it's IMDb, it's about 100. I'm cautiously looking forward to it. I'm well-aware that it could suck, but I'm hoping it's good so that Hollywood can consider more (good) anime adaptations, and take it seriously.

Interesting that there Adapting from Stand Alone Complex rather than the original Ghost in the Shell Movie I'm still looking forward to it of course and won't judge until I "Actually" see the movie.

Seriously? The laughing man is the story they gona adapt? They should've made a orginal story. A story that is written with the manga artist. No way they can make a good story of the laughing man in like 2hours.

Hate to ruin nostalgia but the movie was also a police procedural. |

But it definitely had more complex themes than SAC, which doesn't mean much because SAC is simply more enjoyable than original and outright better than Innocence. |

...I just...can't see Scarlet Johansson as the Major. That's literally been my entire gripe with this concept. Not that I had another actress in mind. I don't know why; she's not a bad actress. Maybe it's simply a case of being unable to think of a significant anime/manga character in a live-action context. The Major has always been especially weird to me in that regard: every time I see a new iteration of her, I balk a little at first until I have time to warm up.
I agree: I do not like this description of the Laughing Man. The character was disillusioned with the workings of the system, but "bitter"? They make him sound defeated. And ultimately, he wasn't the villain anyway. I sure hope they don't force him to be one irredeemably. Agh! So much could go wrong with this! They're already making the mistake of maintaining a Japanese setting while whitewashing the damned thing! ...I'll still watch it. I hope it's good, though. Hollywood needs more in good live action film adaptanans of such properly. |
