25000 downloads is no more meaningful than the 10 million $ in lost money coming from Peter Sunde's copying machine
http://thenextweb.com/insider/2015/12/23/pirate-bay-co-founder-builds-device-that-costs-the-music-industry-10000000-a-day/#gref We have no ability to know how many would have bought or wouldn't have bought this. I'm sure at lease some of the downloaders enjoyed it and didn't go on to pay, but if they were somehow forced to pay for this many would have chosen some other roughly equivalent thing that they weren't forced to pay for. He's far more likely to get more sales from people sharing like this than to lose any with niche porn. As a pirate I know a lot of pirates. I've known better off pirates and worse off pirates but I don't know a single pirate who doesn't own a significant amount of non-bootleg media, much more than I see from people who would never pirate. Many of us nowadays have a netflix/hulu/amazon prime/etc. and still have some niche things that don't land on the platforms that we need to torrent because we either can't find it legitimately or don't want to tack on yet another 10$ a month somewhere else. When I really like something in that area, I try to spend money on it when I can and get the blurays (for Anime, Game of Thrones, Sherlock, etc.) I'm sure not all pirates do this but pirates have a range of different incomes, personal views, etc. Some of them even think copying illegally is immoral, but still do it anyway. So even if you convince them, it doesn't really change what they will do. Better I think to be a realist and not to try and use guilt to manipulate people. They'll just end up being pirates who feel guilty but do it because they like what they like but don't value it quite enough (vs other things they need/want) to pay for it in some instances. |

I can understand his frustration, but I'm pretty sure quitting would only hurt his actual fans. With all of the ero artists out there, nothing is really stopping from someone saying "okay" and then moving onto the next.

We may perhaps disagree with him on issues surrounding piracy, and what to do about it, but calling him a jerk adds absolutely nothing to the discussion as well as being utterly inappropriate. He IS the creator... |

No one wants to pay for porn. Especially when it can have unexpected 'surprises' which aren't obvious in the anime/manga cover, such as futanari and scat. Or so I've heard.

Your scenario isn't anymore comparable. This implies that only one physical copy of the book was bought. We don't know how many copies of the physical book was bought. For example, what if 25,000 copies were bought, and all of them shared it with one friend? And anyone with a scanner can just upload copies of it for themselves to a copy if they wanted, WITHOUT sharing it on the internet. |

It's kind of sad how the companies manipulate their own creators into believing that the data they are given means one thing when it actually means something completely different.
Considering this is an eromanga author, 25,000 copies are a lot of copies; however, if this is about downloads through the internet, it's completely negligible. First of all, I have to wonder where they obtained such "precise" data on illegal downloads, is it from PD? TPB?, Share? Winnie?, what trackers did they look at? Did they consider secondary, tertiary, etc. downloads? Were those downloads within the Japanese territory servers? Did they include overseas downloads? There's practically an unlimited number of places to download things from, even in websites that apparently have nothing to do with manga or anime can one find eromanga, either scanlated, in raw format, or why not, transcribed into ASCII. Second, did the author REALLY believe those 25,000 "illegal" downloads would have become, as many other posters have already said, a source of income? From my experience in the field (marketing and commerce research), not even a 1% of those downloads would have become a purchase, maybe if this was about a high budget movie or a TV series, about a 10% would have maybe bought it within a period of 1 year, but this being such a niche thing as the eromanga market, I dare say that believing such a thing is beyond dumb. Even nowadays, buying something like an erotic book is believed by the buyer to be something they'll be frowned upon, and even when there are things such as amazon, it's still somewhat hard to buy porn through mail order... moreso when there's something called the internet where one can download the same thing for free, even if it's illegal, and even if a copy of the thing we download costs as little as $6. Third, the company, instead of telling the author such misleading things should make an effort to counter piracy, that is to say, to offer their releases online, to an international audience (this is important), and with either single purchases or subscription methods. And these are just an example of a way to counter piracy. Also, something VERY, VERY important, they should PROMOTE their site and services (and make use of pirates by adding the ads within the magazines, for example). All in all this feels like some company trying to make the author feel sad so that he/she cries in front of his/her fans so that they also feel bad and, just because, buy the magazine/volume. Pretty dumb alltogether. |

Despite the fact that ero manga magazines are on the shelves at convenience stores and book stores every week in Japan, I have a hard time imagining that they all get sold. If you really want to made money in this day and age you have to sell cheap downloads anonymously. And it needs to be cheap enough that people won't bother pirating them.

Until he provides evidence that his paycheck is shrinking then I feel it's a non issue. Although he's free to do what he wants, it's just that he won't get any sympathy/action from me.

That might explain the NTR warnings on doujinshi at C89. People got freaked out at it, I don't blame them, I don't want to see futanari in my yuri doujinshi (because not all of them use shorthand or anything denoting that it's futa and I might want to stay away, I'd say about 40%-50% have some sort of indication that it's futanari almost always in the title). Please make your title illustrate the content in it like an long LN title. |

FAKKU has already published two of his one-shots, one of which is one of my favourites. So it would be a real shame if he quit because two is just not enough.

I'm imagining someone watching a movie in a theater and then asking for a refund because they thought the movie was good but not that good.
That's pretty funny. "Why is he so upset? Less than 1% weren't going to buy his stuff anyway." |
