Only thing I can really say poistive about Dragonar is that Yui Sakikibara is always good. Loved her song and minimal role in the show. But it was overall a pretty bland/bad anime. Not the worst I've seen (i still think infinite stratos 2 was worse) but still bad

Any of the Monogatari series, for sure, as others have mentioned. I also loved Kill la Kill, and what I've seen of Shokugeki no Soma doesn't seem to bad either. I even liked a fair amount of No Game No Life, despite its shortcomings. There's also Free!, even if it doesn't aim for my demographic in particular.
Yeah, it's been really interesting with this job in that I've been forced to abandon the choosiness with which I approached anime for a lot of my life. Though I was pretty voracious in high-school and some of college, once I got so busy with my post-collegiate work I had to become a lot pickier when it came to which shows I did and did not commit my time to. Reviewing for Shelf Life has caused me to encounter a lot of shows I might not have ordinarily watched in my own spare time. Sometimes it leads to present surprises, like Umimonogatari, and other times it means I have to fight through all the episodes of a show like Dragonar. When it comes to fan-service, I usually draw the line when it becomes overbearing or distracting, and rapey/molestation is way beyond the pale for me. Different strokes for different folks, and all that. |

Certainly from a critic perspective, distracting fanservice is undesirable, but for those coming to be serviced (phrasing), the fanservice cannot, almost by definition, be distracting, especially the ones where the plot isn't very compelling. It's what puts the butts in the seats. Where you stand depends on where you sit, I guess. However, in some cases, even in ones that could use a distraction, I have felt the same way "That's nice and all but is that really necessary". The super censored versions, especially the light bars, are in my opinion more annoying and distracting than any fan service I've seen. Much of it could have been broadcast too I believe, but they want something to make people by the DVD/Blurays. On another note, I totally forgot KlK. I not sure I would qualify NGNL as a fanservice show, though it does have a healthy amount. I haven't seen Free but I have heard it is good, not just from a fanservice perspective. |

Dragonar Academy is that soul crushing and it's only 12 episodes? Yikes.
I guess as I get older and my access to porn has increased, my tolerance for anime that exists solely to showcase fanservice has dropped significantly. Highschool of the Dead could have been a fun (if braindead) series, but holy fudge did the constant parade of boobies (both live and dead) made me want to punch my television. If I want smut, I'll seek out smut. I dont need it in my cartoons. |

In addition to those mentioned above, Asobi ni Iku Yo! has some decent sci-fi behind all the jiggly bits. Viewer ratings here put it a few slots short of top-20% (990 out of 4847.) |

I'd rather boobs stay far away from dragons. After all, Dragonaut the Resonance still lingers in my mind as a previous example of mixing gross tits with dragons (and crappy CG ones at that). Never again damn it.
That Garden of Sinners collection is absolutely nuts. Dear god. XD |
