Kinda surprised the review of Vinland Saga didn't mention its by the same guy who did Planetes.
Amazing book. |

Wow I didn't think anyone knew about Blue, that manga is one of the most incredible mangas I've ever read. Other deep yuri manga I'd recommend would be Pumpkin Mayonaise, Sweet and Blue Flowers, and Free Soul.

While it's not a favorite, I did rather love Blue and would like to buy Sweet Cream and Red Strawberries as it was at least once available at Deep Discount. I think I had to import Blue though, I really can't recall where I managed to pick it up, but it was definitely online. I liked it because it wasn't fop fodder yuri, but rather the type that I like--the kind that isn't so blatantly obvious that it's playing to every fanboy's misplaced fantasy. I wish more josei manga (particularly with yuri themes) would get brought over...
Okay, doing a quick search, Sweet Cream and Red Strawberries is no longer available at DeepDiscount (it was a Central Park Media manga, so I'm guessing it's gone now); however, Blue is now available there instead. |

I'm very interested in Blue. I remember seeing it in several manga lists here so from that moment on my interest was piqued. Damn, now I don't have an excuse since the link is right in front of me!
Vinland Saga also seems nice. I've heard nothing but praise for the author's work so that also seems like it's worth checking out. |

Awesome plug for Blue. Kiriko Nananan is an amazing storyteller and more people should read her work. I'm not really much of a yuri fan, but Blue is so delicately drawn and written it's hard to imagine anyone not being touched by the story to some degree.

Major props for the mention of Blue. It's still one of my favorite manga, available legally or scanlated. It's becoming scarce, but hopefully Ponent Mon/Fanfare will be able to produce a second printing soon. Wonderful manga.
Great import of the month in the form of Vinland Saga, too. Just waiting for Del Rey to eventually announce that they have it. A good number of its battles rival those found in the epic Berserk. It's a blast to read so far three volumes in. |

Okay, apparently I have to try and get my hands on a copy of Blue. Chapters.ca has it, though it is a bit pricey since it's an older manga (or so I'm assuming). Oh, to have money

I've been wanting to read blue for a while now. A friend recommended it to me a long time ago (back then I didn't even know that it was yuri), but I'd never gotten around to it. I'm pretty sure I saw it at my local Borders recently (or was is Barnes & Noble?). I think I just might go pick it up, after reading about it in this week's RTO.

It's pricey because it's always been pricey -- the publisher has to charge premium prices because they specialize in non-mainstream works and do really small print runs. Plus the volume is done on all glossy paper, so it's a true "you get what you pay for" deal. |

I've actually read 'Blue' and I don't like yuri. But 'Blue' was actually quite good; I was quite surprised considering how most yuri turn out.

Ah, okay, that makes sense. I'm glad we get a bit of an extra for shelling out the extra 5-10 bucks for it (which isn't that much, I suppose ) |

Another shoutout to fantastic Blue. However, I wouldn't mention it in the same sentence with Kashimashi, hell, I wouldn't mention it even in the same review, preferably not even the same page.
Blue is josei whereas Kashimashi is seinen. The other is deeply moving psychological coming of age story about friendship, love and loyalties... the other one is a titillating light and silly comedy meant for salarymen to read while commuting. Honestly, it's not even apples and oranges, it's like apples and steak or something... each is good but there's time and a place for each and you'd never get them mixed up. Ahem. Not knocking down Kashimashi, I thought it ok even though slightly artificial, but just wanted to point out the difference |

I’ve read the first 2 volumes of Vinland Saga so far. I believe the 2nd is mostly Thorfinn’s backstory as well. In any case it’s a great story just like Planetes is. I’m hoping Del Rey will pick it up like they surprised me with Me and the Devil Blues.

@ kolibri: So dear lady, what sort of ending does Blue have? I'm not asking for massive spoilers, but I'd hate to spend good money on it just to end up wishing I'd bought something else. (Especially true in this case since it seems hard to find and that usually translates to expensive.)
How would you classify this one's ending? Upbeat, depressing, or just fitting? |
