The anime and manga have a few important differences, so its better to just start at the beginning.

It's funny how much better the manga is compared to the anime (story wise)

I really enjoyed all the extra material at the end of the volume, like the school song and the timeline of important events in the city's history. It's always nice when the publisher goes the extra mile to get this kind of stuff for the English-language release.

The anime was fantastic, so I'm eager to check out the manga. Out of curiosity, how gory is the manga compared to the anime? I saw some manga images that, while not really bloody, looked pretty brutal and had some Higurashi-level facial expressions.

It's brutal in the sense that it doesn't show much blood or gore - just enough to let your imagination do a much grimmer job. I actually think it's less gruesome than Higurashi.

After reading about School Days, I have developed a grimace for any title that starts with the word "School" in it. I don't know why though.
This sounds like a sequel to Highschool Of The Dead.
