Akira's dub actress is amazing for what her character needs to be, she is a stuck up little bitch and you want to slap her and THAT is what her performance bleeds.

As for Wixoss itself, it is and under appreciated gem, if you are a Dubs only type of watcher it is worth catching at some point.

I thought the show was just okay.

As it progresses some things start to become slightly less believable and i feel it goes for a nice cruise to mach sped "Things are happening!" mode way to quickly.

The whole twins subplot was kinda confusing for me, it took me about 6-7 episodes to figure out of the sister's wish was for him to love her or for her to stop loving him. That and when "It" happens he changes moods way to quickly for it to make any sense.

I mean i get magic and stuff but he goes from "No i don't love my sister like that" to a few hours later when he wants to make out with her.

overall the show was okay but it feels way to serious for a card game show.

I picked up the LE but have yet to watch it. I'm tempted to watch a few episodes to make sure I like it, but then hold off watching anymore until the second season comes out on video. Like does the final episode of Season 1 end on a Code Geass Season 1 final moment (as in, "oh come on, I've got to wait how long to find out who's going to be okay?!") or an Attack on Titan Season 1 final moment (as in, "ooh, that's cool, looking forward to Season 2")?

Great show, both seasons. But it need a tag-line: WIXOSS, the only winning move is not to play. LITEARLLY.

.

I am going to have to role with "teenagers are foolish" spoiler[after Hanayo possesses Yuzuki, she actively tries to calm and seduce the brother and make it clear that "its alright if you want me" which is something that Yuzuki would never willingly do on her own.

At least for my viewing experience, the scenes with Yuzuki actually made an active effort to weaken the brother's defenses was more than enough for them eventually playing the roles of boyfriend/girlfriend, it also helps that he didn't really put up a fight to stop the advances.]

Definitely one of my favourite anime in recent memory.

The suffering is delicious. Strong review. Looking forward to the movie.

It's Yuzuki.

The thing with the wishes (I forget which season revealed this so spoiler tagged) spoiler[they're all things that could be granted by the Selector's own efforts. No magic is involved with the actual wish granting. Kazuki always had feelings for Yuzuki, he just didn't know it/was in denial about it.]

It's Code Geass style.

I completely agree. I've been waiting for this review basically to mention just how good I thought Jamie Marchi's performance was. Overall, this dub ended up being really good, and a big part of what kept me watching. I'm kind of torn on whether I want to watch the next season right now. I'd like to see the rest of the story, but after listening to that dub, I think I'm willing to wait.

Honestly, I have no idea what made me start watching this show in particular. Normally, product promotion shows don't do much for me, but when I started, I thought maybe it wasn't actually related to a real card game. Considering how serious and grim it is, and the lack of focus on game mechanics, I didn't know for sure that WIXROSS was a real thing until watching the commentary.

A bit of both, I'd say. Maybe more of the first choice. After having watched the first season, I can sympathize. As I said above, I'm struggling with whether to wait for the dub that hasn't been announced at this point.

This anime just felt way too forced for me to really praise it at all. It didn't really try to do anything different or special. It merely took "dark magical girl" concepts and made their "magic" a card game instead of their own power. It's just dark magical girl transposed. It wasn't bad in execution, but the resolution in the end of s2 was very lackluster and the characters were dull and whiny.

"− One character depicted prominently in packaging and the opener only has a throwaway cameo, artistry and animation are sometimes a little rough, BR menu coloring." Which character? All the characters on the cover (if that's what youre referring to) are important in S2, at least.

Must be referring to Chiyori, especially in s1 at best she is a "one scene wonder" and at the same time she can be taken as little more important than some of the side characters.

You seem to be forgetting that this review is for season 1 only, not the whole franchise. Not a speck of what happens in Spread is supposed to be covered or discussed here. Thus, based on Infected only, the statement is entirely accurate.

And if the second season doesn't end as well then that will be covered when the second season's review comes around.

To address some people's complaints, I always assumed that Kazuki falling for Hanayo!Yuzuki was a result of the wish being granted. As such, certain mental blocks were removed so that he could subconsciously think of Hanayo!Yuzuki as a lover. I dunno. Just go with "wish granted" logic and it makes sense.

This show was amazing! I watched it for the first time on Blu-ray after pre-ordering it simply because I had a feeling I would love it. Turns out that I was right! With all the hype around Madoka, I found it to be... underwhelming until the final three episodes. The internet doesn't shut up about spoilers, and once you know that spoiler[Magical Girls become witches and Mami dies in episode three,] you can quickly guess how everything about Sayaka turns out. The big plot twists and emotional whammies are lessened because I knew what would happen, but unlike other shows where I got character tragedies and deaths spoiled (Fate/Zero, Hunter x Hunter, and even Anohana) I felt no sadness during the scenes that these happened in. No emotion at all, because in its whole 12 episodes, it didn't get me to relate with or even like Sayaka, Kyoko, Mami, or Madoka (until near the end). I don't think it's that 12 episodes isn't enough (Anohana got me attached to most of its characters by episode 7), but I think it had the ol' Ghost in the Shell problem. These characters, while well-written, lacked the humanity of others.

This wasn't the case for Wixoss. We saw the girls having fun playing this game, got a nice look at their inner motivations, and hell, most of them are very likable in their own ways. Even Iona's Seto Kaiba-esque confidence and Akira's bitchy demeanor are difficult not to find entertaining. Hell, the... stuff, that happens to Hitoe in episode 5 hit me pretty hard, even though it was spoiled for me. Plus, even though incest is a rather controversial topic, I can sympathize more with Yuzuki than Sayaka, because... Kazuki is an attractive, nice guy. He's honestly got a sort of (generic, but still wholly likable) personality. Sousuke seems more like a plot device that Sayaka and Hitomi like simply as an excuse to make Sayaka sad, and even then, I fail to see what there is to get so depressed about. Even with the added angst bonus of "well, she's a pre-teen so boiz r srs business" I never really grasped it. The worst part is that the show, up until she spoiler[becomes a witch] largely focuses on this annoying contrivance. I found Yuzuki and Kazuki's thing to be a little on the icky side, but sympathetic throughout. It was less "these siblings love each other, isn't it hot?" and more "If one sibling fell in love with another, this is how it would realistically play out."

I'm not sure if I'd call this a deconstruction or anything (which is a word that anime fans love to throw around whenever they see a dark version of a genre piece), but it is one of the best anime of recent years. It's gone a little under the radar next to others that came out last year, like Tokyo Ghoul and Terror of Resonance, but I'd say that it's just as good. Could it be that labeling this as a "card game anime" scared off viewers? I'm just glad it got a top notch release and English Dub. Can't wait for the next season to blow my mind.

I just recently watched this series subbed and thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of it. It wasn't flawless, but I had a fun time watching it. I think it managed to outdo Madoka at time, in the development of just pure psychological suffering. And I loved the ending of the first season. Shit hit in the fan and it was glorious.

Second season is even better than the first. And while I can't say I was ok with all the explanations during Spread and the ending of it for that matter, this whole series was quite a ride and I enjoyed it.

Can't wait for the Selector Destructed WIXOSS movie. There were a few plot holes in the original series that I hope the movie will wrap up. Plus the original ending was too happy, but I hope the movie will twist things a little bit.

I loved this series, but a B+ seems fair. It has its issues(they should have at least explained the basics of the game, and it was over-dramatic at times) but overall I liked the dark and twisted nature of the series. I knew from the trailer that it would get dark, but I didn't expect it to be as twisted as it was. I preferred it over Madoka as well. I always thought the background art was a bit different but I couldn't put my finger on it. They were clearly hand drawn and painted, but it was the grainy texture that caught my eye. It made everything look gritty and dirty without actually being, well, dirty. And I'm glad you mentioned the music, as Wixoss' soundtrack was one of my favorites from last year. Listening to the D&B, dubstep, pulsating synthesizers and heavy bass with headphones with headphones on is a powerful experience. I especially loved how the music would slowly rise and suddenly cut off or fade into static when sh*t got real.

I really want to buy this soon so I can hear the dub (it would've been cool if Funi included a special translated Wixoss card as a nice collectible bonus but oh well.) I'm really curious about how Akira sounds. She genuinely scares me (those scene were she chases the protagonists around and forces them to fight make me really anxious for some reason) but I have to hear Marchi's take.
