I pretty much agree with Jojothepunisher. I just wanted to add that I thought the stupid lines during the baby scene were stupid on purpose, indicative of a Sherlock -like inability to communicate in normal ways with people. Who would say such a thing to a baby? Someone who had no idea how to deal with one.

If this story ever gets off the ground and starts to impress I hope it does it soon. The first episode's tone left me cold. I almost bailed midway in episode 2 but opted to suffer the consequences and stick it out.
Thanks for mentioning the interaction between the 2 intrepid psuedo-detectives. That insight may help me overcome my defense mechanisms to not bother with episode 3 if I decide to care and choose to waste precious little free time observing it.
Nick: on a more esoteric note using proper English: the word groan (4th paragraph) was misspelled. Even Urban Dictionary and Wikipedia couldn't earn you a pass on this one, although phonetically you're close.

I'll give this show another episode, but I don't exactly have high hopes for this one. All of the issues already mentioned in this thread and the review are spot on, as are the positives.

"Beautiful Bones is not a good show yet.
That doesn't mean it couldn't become a good show! That just means it has a lot of work to do. So far, these first two episodes have introduced a clear premise and two central characters who actually work well together."
Pfft. I've noticed ANN has been trying especially hard lately to make bad anime sound good, or at least decent. I guess they have to with all the trashy anime that comes out these days, but still. And that last sentence is an outright lie. What clear premise? I don't think this anime really knows what it wants to be. Also the two characters are pretty darn unlike-able. At the very least, they aren't that interesting and don't really work well together.

I was actually pleased by episode 3. It felt more focused and purposeful. Episodes like this one are what can make me improve my opinion of Beautiful Bones. For now it is a decent show to me, but I want it to get better.

This anime states that it's dedicated to those "stuck in the past". I think the emotional aspect is more important than the mystery side of things.
And I do love that Japanese sentimentality but I guess it can be lost on some people.

When I thought they were gonna stop that abominable transformation scene with Sakurako, they brought that stuff back again this episode.

I liked it. It might be the first time I've seen an anime discuss dementia and its impact on families.

I liked this episode too because of how it handled the wear and guilt of a family with a senior who has dementia. And I didn't see the end as some sort of magic reveal. It felt to me like she was telling the girl something that would let her go on, a story that wasn't necessarily true. Otherwise she would have revealed the truth to the cops, right?

I think of this series as the animated version of the Bones tv series.
always a fan of these mystery type series
Detective Conan being #1 on the list

Possibly but at the same time the fat old man doesn't seem to really care what she has to say and comes to his own conclusions. She was escorted away while she was rambling then proceeded to sulk after what ever happened with her. It could be a 50/50 on what really happened to her but to a cop I guess accidental falling and purposely falling count as the same thing.

They really aren't because a death ruled suicide means the heirs don't get insurance money, so the difference in ruling is a huge deal. And she would know that it could mean the difference between the family being able to support the grandfather to a better degree and settling for only what they can scrape by with.

Seriously this episode turns me down. Well I must admit that I am looking for a more logical and mysterious side from this show rather than sentimental side. The 'transformation scene' gets more and more ridiculous, like how they use the same scene in episode 1 without changing her clothes (long-sleeve shirt same like epi.1 but actually she wears a sleeveless in episode 3). The scene at first brings about a mysterious vibe from Sakurako, but then her findings and assumptions become so easily and half-hearted (to me at least). Everything is based on 'assumption', the police and local detective seem so useless and the anime is too lazy to review their actions after Sakurako and Shoutaro find the bone. Furthermore, in this episode, it would be much better if they show more flashbacks with Kougami and her grandmother involve since it would make their relationship much clearer and had a more significant emotional impact.

I'm shocked at the heavy criticism leveled at the series. Gorgeous animation aside, I find it to be poignant and thought-provoking, and though it has some melodramatic moments, these are so often forgiven in most anime. And as someone who's watched everything on the anime genre spectrum, from Psycho-Pass and Future Diary to Ben-To and D-Frag!, it seems to me that Beautiful Bones is being held to an unreasonable standard.
What I find so interesting about the series is that more than any other anime I've watched, it has some elements of a procedural which is most often found in American TV. It's easy to draw a comparison between it and the FOX show Bones, albeit with the anime being the more elevated of the two, I think. I especially loved this third episode, because I've dealt with and still deal with issues of dementia in my family, and it was interesting to see something like anime shine a light on that.
Also, I'm surprised that so many people find the "investigation mode" sequence so jarring. It's no more than fifteen seconds of airtime, and to see people claiming that it detracts so heavily from their viewing experience seems to me a rather inordinate reaction.
Beautiful Bones is easily one of my top 3 anime this season, behind The Perfect Insider and ahead of Titan Junior High. Again, I'm just not sure why it's so objectionable to so many. I find it to be a breath of fresh air. Goodness knows it's not perfect, but this last episode was way better than a C, for sure.

Yeah, I definitely felt the same way.
I think it's not to the show's favor that it's aired just a night before the relatively superior Perfect Insider (which Creamer certainly liked a lot more), but even as the two are superficially similar, they're still very different kind of show. Taken in the context of being 'episodic procedural anime', Sakurako's a show that I can totally understand not being everyone's cup of coffee (e.g. what I see as deliberate underlining of Sakurako's amusing eccentricity might be interpreted by others as "horrible dialogue"), but it's well-executed enough for what it is that I felt people are being excessively harsh to it.
