Ah, I knew it!
That being said, I do think this is a bold decision. The disc sales are abysmal, the manga boost isn't very significant, so is there any other reason that the production committee green lit a second season? TV ratings? License fees? (I do know that various Chinese streaming sites paid ridiculous amount just for this show) |

Keep it at 2, keep it at 2, don't overdo it, keep it at 2.

NHK-E anime usually don't depend a lot on disc sales. Baby Steps got a second season despite not having good sales as well. It was in the same channel as Rinne iirc. I think it's TV ratings which matter here.

Wait, what? Then why is RIN-NE 24 listed here: animenewsnetwork.com/news/2015-03-25/japanese-comic-ranking-march-16-22/.86367 As for this news, I'm happy with more RIN-NE anime. I started watching the current season last week, and I've been enjoying what I have seen. |

Good news.
With the direction of the latest few episodes, I was wondering if this may get another season. Thank goodness it did! |

I figured as much. They must continue spreading the no facial expression wonder of Mamiya Sakura.

This is a show that airs in the afternoons in Japan, not a late night anime. It's meant to be for kids and families, so disc sales aren't where the money is. Instead, it's ratings and advertising that make or break.

The manga sales of Baby Steps seem to have received a reasonable boost though, which I am sure would have been a large contributing factor to future seasons being produced. |

We just mixed up the Japanese and English releases. The English 19th volume is coming out in November. Thanks for pointing that out, it's been fixed in the article. |

I think people looking at sales figures are missing some of the larger context.
Rumiko Takahashi has a huge track record of success, with 3 blockbuster series in the 80s and 90s, and that really changes the calculus for the publishing companies when dealing with her. Even if her current series doesn't sell well, it's really important that they keep her under contract in some way, and for all we know the 2 season anime was something she negotiated before even starting the manga serialization... That's the power of the legacy works and the money that they still bring in for the companies involved. Directly comparing numbers between her and other manga-ka or anime with different clout doesn't tell you the whole story. |

Engineering Nerd: Sentai and/or CR probably paid good money for it. And Rumiko Takahashi's shonen manga tends to have crossover female appeal. So maybe that demo was stronger than usual in the tv ratings. And perhaps the manga sales got a boost over here, at least? Or somewhere else internationally?
