I sure hope that they actually have a full Japanese cast unlike "Memoirs of a Geisha" for this.

Doubtful:

He plans to reset the film in modern Hong Kong.

Meaning it'll probably be another gangster movie.

"He plans to reset the film in modern Hong Kong."

This means it's going to be crapified. They really need to just get new ideas rather than turning every good movie into a crap one. And, why modern Hong Kong? This screams out Romeo and Juliet, the Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes version... I think this dippy director or whatever isn't getting the picture of what the original movie is about... and why does this remind me of Chris Rock's character in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back movie?

They're remaking a 2-year old movie? Really?

I'm okay with movie remakes and homages, but one that was just made 2 years ago?? I'm still waiting to see what will happen with the US remake of My Sassy Girl...

Wow, that was fast. The movie is only two years old, for crying out loud.

As for the modern reset, I can't believe he is going to do that. You're right, sykoeent, it does scream out the DiCaprio/Danes Romeo & Juliet. This sure doesn't look all that promising.

When they say "remake," I think they mean make a Hollywood version. It's NOT uncommon-- Ring, Grudge, whatever, it's been done before, nothing to scream about.

Although... Shinobi in modern Hong Kong? That IS something to scream about. Sort of like that English-manga Romeo and Juliet set in Japan with yakuza.

Actually, I think it's quite funny. Well, there's a lot of manga getting Hollywood adaptions, but the only one we ever hear anything about is Speed Racer. Are these projects (MONSTER PLEASE) even underway?!

Does this mean that FUNi lost the rights to the live-action version only? The anime version won't disappear like Battle Angel did?

I been a long time fan of "basilisk kouga ninposho" and let me tell you that SHINOBI was a piece of crap itself, took many liberties at the point of creating another story that didn't make any sense and the characters rushed to die to make the movie on time.

the remake of the movie is necesary to bring justice to the original story, but you guys jump and say a movie will be a piece of crap before this movie is actually made? preety bold of you eh?

at least hong kong cinema is fun (god of cookery anyone?)

well, i think SHINOBI by itself was decent if not good, regardless of Basilisk Koga Ninpochou -- it's pretty difficult to make a mainstream movie with a lot of really ugly characters anyway.

I think the reason it sounds ridiculous is that it is Hollywood remake (?) but set in HK?? And Ninja are Japanese... so if Geisha starring chinese actors turned out bad... look at how this one would be.

Sure, many are jumping the gun & dismissing it before it even seeing the remade shooting start, but based on the most asian-hollywood remakes we had seen, many were flops. (many, not all... of course you can win an oscar with a remake). heck, even hollywood dubs&cuts turned out crappy... (shaolin Soccer, Fist of Legend).
But then, if you think Shinobi did not do Basilisk justice, it's pretty bold yourself to think a hollywood-in-HK will "bring justice to the original story".
(sorry if i got the hollywood part wrong, but don't miss the point)

edit::
besides,
ANN wrote:

and Del Rey published Futaroh Yamada's The Kouga Ninja Scrolls novel that inspired SHINOBI. The novel also inspired the Basilisk manga published by Del Rey and the Basilisk: The Kouga Ninja Scrolls anime released by Funimation.

so, from what i understand,
SHINOBI is based on Kouga Ninpochou rather than Basilisk
edit end::

Admittedly God of Cookery is great, that was 10 yrs ago.
HK cinema recently is mediocre (Kung Fu Mahjong??), save for a few here & there (Infernal Affairs etc)

just my 2cents, don't take offense pls.
