The QC issues with the first release stopped me from buying it, partially in hopes that VIZ would make good on what had been done wrong, in spite their official negative response when asked. Now we have a second set with continued - albeit not as severe - issues.

VIZ knows they've dropped the ball, they are good people and they know it - all the way from the mail room here in the US to the executive offices in Japan. There is no way on earth that they don't.

So, they need to fix the problem with the materials and / or mastering and they need to issue replacement disks for what is now two problematic releases.

VIZ, please stop digging, the hole is deep enough, time to fill it back in.

Studios might offer one replacement disk if there was one episode that had screwups, but they don't offer three-disk replacement sets.
It's just a cautionary that not all TV series adjust to the Blu-ray era as well as the Ranma episodes on film did, so best to proceed carefully.

As for me, I wanted to get the sets just for the new dub, but was warned about the Blu-ray cooking enough to just settle for the more reasonably priced DVD dubs, and they've been good enough so far.

Good review, but didn't Minako get a bit of character development in that episode she had with Katarina? I think she did, and it was better than the Venus in Crystal, weeping like a crybaby like Silver Surfer on NES: http://media.tumblr.com/2c528710a010a0de7b55c18781bcdfdf/tumblr_inline_ngvnw1RcSn1sluwgl.png

Even so, at least R and the oncoming seasons fleshed out Makoto and Minako's characters.

Also, just wondering, why does the subbed version have a B-?

I never watched Sailor Moon, but it looks like they're going to omit She's Got the Power by Stan Bush.

How can anyone do this? Stan Bush makes anything cool!

This page explains all that.

What does this even mean. Good people? So the Viz Media staff are good hearted people, and this is why they have to get their shit together? I would not care if they were mean people as long as they did their releases right.

What hole? I bet Viz is making a lot of money with these Sailor Moon sets. They will not give a shit about what we think as long as they keep selling a lot.

I also cancelled my preorder of part two. Not only because of the video issues on part one, but more due to Viz's cognitive dissonance. Seems to have been a good call.

That's a good point about the Katarina episode - it is strictly for Minako's development. Compared to the number of Ami and Rei episodes, it isn't much, though.

I gave the sub a lower grade because I find (and this is going to sound blasphemous) Usagi's Japanese voice can get really irritating. I rarely, if ever, felt that new English Usagi was the vocal equivalent of nails on a chalkboard - her character could be annoying at times, but her voice wasn't. That just wasn't true for sub Usagi for me. (Or Bad Old Dub Usagi(s) for that matter...though I admit to occasionally rewatching my VHS collection of it.)

I have read all of the manga and holy shit is it different!
It even has a lot of "fan-service btw. to appeal to all i guess and i have it sitting on a "decent" as it is a bit of mess. Cogh - The last arc makes no sense! - Cogh.
That said i still had fun and would have liked to see a more polished as less rushed version of the tale but slave driver editors are to blame here. The Kanzenban version is of course more cleaned up so that is the definitive tale.
My opinion on the current Crystal is the same as it is a 1 to 1 adaptation that treats the OG series with respect.

This old version does NOT and i know that i have Wikia, most of the Sailor Moon community and to a degree even Naoko on my side as she bitched about it a lot despite praise in the author´s notes. I may have seen all of the show at age 8 to 9 but nostalgia won´t make me blind. Sailor Moon S Movie: Hearts in Ice is a "good" as it adapts the best part of the manga 1 to 1 and the rest has "week" by me. Even the messy V manga is 1 point higher. Eh.

That Crystal has a bad reception (i don´t care about ANN bitching) as factually wrong as it raises awareness for our hobby like only Titan and before that Death Note in the last 10 years. My library copies have all been flying off the shelves after the reboot started, i know a lot of young girls who started to watch anime for real due to it and many famouse entertainment sites are covering it weekly. So i say well done Toei and go cry in a corner Toei. Wait they did both version? Confused (but i knew this). The old show had an amazing first opening, gave us Utena (he is a one hit wonder!) and nothing else besides much needed and appreciated promotion for the medium of course.

The most successfully shoujo ever Hana Yori Dango (new version why?) is pretty lame if you ask me and i hope that Crsytal skips "Parallel Sailor Moon" which decided that is is ok for the 5 scout to be married with children in their early 20s (magical 27 anyone?) as that is a horrible value to teach to young girls.
Jupiter is the best one and then Saturn. Neptune (who is she?) is the worst but Venus (Proto Usagi with no hear or story-arc) was no great shakes either. Uranus is finally still one of the few good realistic gay characters that japan put in a daytime anime. Manga / midnight shows don´t count as they don´t have the same reach and way less content restrictions. Have fun screaming at me. Signed by a 26 year old man and i borderline fan of the manga.
Edit: The OG german dub is ok btw. but cares. Subs only is the ONLY way.
Edit2: I just listened to the OG english dub Shocked . I can do better!

It's not our job to do better. It's theirs.

It's a real shame, because Studiopolis did a great job with the English dub, and yet Viz themselves completely dropped the ball on the video quality.

Well, maybe the movie releases will look better.

I'll wait and import the Madman sets when those come out, with the hope that they really did delay their release "with the end goal to deliver fans a great product."

In the first season intro, when the new English Usagi giggles that she's nervous but she'll do her best, it's an actual cute tee-hee...Which is sort of an adjustment after Kotono Mitsuishi's deliberately annoying "Eh-heh-heh-heh".
The NEU does come close to the "annoyingly" cute incompetence of the Japanese Usagi without going over, which to her credit, is really hard to do.

I think I'll wait until I see whether Toei's own ongoing HD remaster they are doing for broadcasting will eventually make the jump to BDs. Won't touch Viz's discs...

It is funny, but it smacks a bit of ADV's old Ghost Stories dub as well.
You do realise that slight script changes and additional little jokes are commonplace in English dubs right?

Well the main reason they're even doing this is in response to how badly Viz stuffed up up. It'd make no sense for them to screw up in the same way.

Oddly enough, I am aware of that fact. And I generally enjoy it as well - it's the reason I'd much rather watch a comedy dubbed (usually; there are exceptions). My issue, or perhaps worry, was that it at times got to be a bit too much in terms of background levels of camp.
