Are those sums really enough to aid in the relief actions or are they more of a symbolic donation?

I think they are a bit of both to be honest... Although 15 thousand dollars does seem like a super low amount..

That $15,000+ could be quite significant for Japan considering the currency difference.

It's for charity, and assigning no fault at all; still that's the equivalence of about half a US cent per.
