Buy the downloads, then buy the DVDs with extras, then by the SE DVDs with the "new sequences".

I can only hope when this comes out in Aus, we just get one complete release.

Are we talking about a post-finale episode length of 20+ minutes or just a few extra scenes?
What is the length of this "special broadcast"?

Generally new sequences means short added content, or cleaned up or slightly altered old content.

This slightly makes more sense why no word of a hardcopy release has been let out. I just hope they don't do a multiple special release like mjgeo suggests.

Edit:
eww Never mind, just read 4 or 5 new pieces down, and see the DVD has been announced, finally. I wonder which master copy they will be working from?

Even if this post-finale thing only has a few new things in it, I would still like to see it. The ending to the anime was so good I cant wait to see what else they do.

So it's going to be just a re-airing of the final episode, only this time with a few extra scenes?

Good news, I guess, but I would have preferred a whole new episode to wrap things up with. I haven't been keeping up with the anime, but I finished the manga and wasn't entirely satisfied with the ending (the ending was great, but left too many loose ends that the final chapter didn't deal with clearly enough).

I'm guessing that they're just going to animate the epilogue and broadcast it as part of this special. Makes sense that they'd leave one little bit to milk later on.

So what is being aired during the summer? The series or another episode?

This is good news; hopefully the final chapter of the manga will be part of this new "special broadcast". Without that final chapter and Matsuda's theory, the anime seems incomplete.

It will be.. it'll be the final chapter about what happens to the world one year after spoiler[Kira dies.] More info here

Well we know it's a special, but I wonder how long it'll be... the normal half hour? 45 minutes? Mmmm... either way, I can't wait to see it. Smile

Huh? That link doesn't offer any more info, just speculation of what COULD be in the broadcast.

I hope they include a scene that explain how spoiler[Near divined Mikami as X-Kira. ]

Anyway, I really hope that special is the epilogue with spoiler[Near as L and the candlelight vigil.]

[/spoiler]

I was under the impression that that happened because:

spoiler[Well... Since Takada was spokeperson, it probably had to be some one vaguely aquainted with her (meaning that it could be narrowed down to people who have appeared on the shows where she was spokesperson or whatever)...

While... uhh... sifting through old broadcast tapes, Mikami showed up and apparently had competent answers (though, you'd think that there'd be more footage to sift through) and the right background...

But yeah... if Near did a bunch of overblown stuff, he would've eventually come across Mikami much in the same way Light did anyway...

I mean, Mikami was supposedly everywhere "god" could see him... so... yeah...

They just hurried up the process since it could be narrowed down to people who appeared on the shows Takada was in anyway...

]

But yeah, it's pretty hokey, but that's kinda how it went... and it got proved almost immediately anyway, so there was no reason to look around for some one else.

Well, in the manga, spoiler[Near spent (a lot of) hours going through old footage of "Kira's Kingdom" before spotting him. I guess it would have been too time constraining for the anime to show a montage of him going "Maybe this one...? Nah". So they instead gave him the weird instant eye-glow effect. But yeah, the anime was basically a summary of the manga, where Near would spend entire pages explaining the logic behind his conclusions. In the anime, he comes to a conclusion without explaining why, and he looks like a psychic because of it.]

Oh, I know how they explain it in the manga, I just wish the same sequence would be added in somehow so it doesn't seem like Near is quite so "hax". It irritates me when the anime just has him divine things without the same amount of explanation as granted in the manga. Granted, there are time constraints in the anime, but some of those scenes are vital to the explaining of the investigation process.

Not that I didn't enjoy the eye-glow.

Hmmm...

Actually, I'm kinda wondering what the series would've been like if they didn't spoonfeed the viewer most of the answers...

(actually, what would happen is that there'd be endless threads of speculation...)
