I was walking to my class at my community college when I noticed a guy wearing a Naruto cosplay jacket and matching but ugly orange and blue nikes. I stopped since i never saw him before and asked "Hey are you into other anime? Are you part of our schools club?" The guys was like "what..nar.huh?Anime? What are you?" and him and his wannabe girlfriend and crew laughed. I said, "Well do you know what your wearing? You're wearing a cartoon characters costume!" (i said cartoon since he wouldnt understand the word anime) and i called him " A poser (insert cuss words here) guy" and walked off.
On a seperate occasion in class the girl in front of me was wearing a Samurai Champloo hat so I asked "Hey you like that show too? Samurai Champloo is kinda cool." She replied "Oh this? I got it at Hot Topic 'because it matches my outfit." I kept in my words of disgust this time but it showed on my face. It's not just these times but other times i seen anime items or clothing just trended. When i think about it was I too hard or out of line with those people? Probably. It just gets me so mad when people just wear things and dont even know what they're wearing. Like when my punk/metal friends go up to a girl who's wearing the heartagram and finds out she doesnt even listen to Him. Posers, Non-taku or whatever they just make me mad because you think they're fans and they arent. I just dont want our subculture to be bastardized like the other subcultures. |

I dunno...
People should just do whatever they want and wear whatever they want... All things considering, fashion in anime has this tendency to be... ... Uhh... bad. |

Gothic lolita's seem to be popular, espeically at Anime North. (don't know if they just wore it for the convention but some people seemed to wear lacy dresses on a a regular day) Kimono shirts are popular among anime fans in real life. Hello Kitty backpacks and accessories are popular among non-anime fans as well as anime fans. Those are the only trends I've noticed.

Yeah, I'd agree you were out of line. There's nothing wrong with wearing something even if you don't know what it's about. That said, I would never do it, I'd feel like a complete retard to not even know what the hell the gigantic symbol on my shirt was.

Hmm actually Id say it is really common for people not to take notice of things like that. Most shirts etc have some sort of print/decoration on them so I doubt its unusual for people to pick up an item they think looks good without too much consideration for what if any meaning there is behind the actual decoration itself. To be honest I would be more interested in know where he got it in the first place. I would not have thought the jacket would be something casually picked up by someone. Could have been a gift though or maybe he was slightly in the closet about his interests. |

DKL nailed it. anime and fashion do NOT mix well.
i saw some drawings from an anime featured in Newtype in the series art section where the shoes looked just like Crocs. theyre those plastic slippers with the heel loop. a couple months later theyre all over the place. i know Crocs have been around longer than this series, but they only became big last year. its a coincidence, but that was freaky. |

Crocs are gardening shoes and I remember three to four years ago going out and getting gardening shoes was the cool thing to do and everyone had them. Once it became popular, Crocs bought the company and they became spread out across North America 2 years ago.
The macro mini (mini that just covers the bum. They came out a year or two ago, but many haute couture designers are promoting them this season) is in this season and most anime girls have been wearing macro minis for years. It could be influence by the mini skirt in the 1960s and how shorts in the 70s were really short, but macro minis in anime has been around for a long time. |

Well, I guess people can wear whatever they want, but that still seems pretty stupid to wear some kinda anime shirt when you don't watch anime... Unless maybe it's Hello Kitty since that's just cute and everywhere anyway. This reminds me of when my friend said a girl at school was wearing a Nirvana shirt and apparently didn't even know it was a Nirvana shirt. I know I wouldn't buy an anime or band shirt if I didn't watch the anime or listen to the band.
But if I ever saw anyone wearing anime clothing, I probably wouldn't say anything to them. It's up to the person to decide what they wear. And I really don't talk to people much in the first place (but I probably need to get out of that a bit before I get a job). And if those Crocs are what I think they are, I personally think those are quite ugly... I don't understand why anyone would want to wear them. But if people really do like them for some reason, they should go ahead and wear them. Edit: I have this necklace, and I wear it often. My aunt said she liked it once, but I don't think she knew what it was. If anyone comes up to me at a store asking me if I like FMA, I'm gonna be like, "Heck yeah, it's awesome" though. ![]() |

Several years ago, when Witch Hunter Robin had just started airing on Adult Swim, this kid came into the store where I worked wearing a T-shirt with Robin on the front. I thought "Cool, another fan." So I approached him and asked him how he liked the series. Blank stare. Had NO clue as to what the hell I was talking about. Another person who thought that the shirt was "cool."
I have to say that I'm another one of those people who want to know what I'm wearing. That's why I will not buy shirts with kanji on them because, since I don't know how to read kanji, I don't know what they say. |

This is an interesting thread I must say. I have seen people wear shirts and asked them like, "So I see you like X" and then they reply, "Ummmm...Who?" It does quite bother me some bit that they have a shirt that labels certain titles and yet they don't know what the label is. I myself have some designer clothing by unknown people so I just don't say anything so I wouldn't look like a hypocritical jerk.
Another thing I want to say is that there are some anime shows that do have certain clothing designs that may inspire people with their fashion style such as Bleach. It's probably one of the best anime with great clothing designs that aren't too complicated. Another thing is that the show also changes their clothing every episode (excuse the shimigami). Though I would like to see people travel around dressed as shimigamis:D. Of course that raises the question what is normal fashion anyways? Most likely people wouldn't care for what others or themselves really wear unless it's too revealing or something. Honestly Crocs are the most ugliest foot wear I have ever seen and I depise those who wear them in public. Other absurd foot wear would also be Heelys. The heels with wheels~!. Great, another way for children to die... |

Hey, I was about to say that what's-her-name star who wanted a tattoo of "girl power" in kanji and ended up with 女力, which was "girl + power" literally but the phrase of two characters didn't make any sense. ![]() |

When I worked at Sam Goody Lydia I saw many examples of that. The Hot Topic in our mall was right across from us, with all their anime t-shirts. About once a week or so I'd get one of those kids in the store and if I was on the Suncoast (video) side I would comment on it, being an anime junkie. Most times I'd get a conversation started and give whoever it was some recommendations. About once a week though I'd get the blank stare. The best case was when this one kid wore this Lost Prophets t-shirt that had an anime chick on it into our store. Now Lost Prophets is a band. I could tell they had no idea and thought it was a show so I laughed really hard when I asked them did they like the show and they said it was awesome and hoped for a second season. ![]() |

You people are harsh -.- Most people don't really care what their t-shirt is saying/showing half the time. It's just clothing and you get it everywhere; sometimes they where clothing with such "trademarks" because they're fans and sometimes they just thought it looked good on them -- which is a perfectly acceptable criteria to put something on your skin quite frankly. Calling them names or quickly judge them to be idiots because of that is, well, ah...
Then again I don't usually approach people myself so the whole "trying to strike up a conversation (taking their clothes as topic clues) and fail" doesn't bother me much. |

I understand viga, cause I hate posers as well (just those people who love Avril Lavigne and insist that she's a rocker), but in this case I don't think the people you referred to are really posers. They just thought that the jacket and the hat was cute and might look good on them, so they bought such items.

yeah, I'm not the type of person to approach people either. I haven't honestly seen too many people wear "anime" shirts either. Although one time when I went to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago I decided to throw on my Inuyasha tshirt and this asian girl kept screaming Inuyasha's awesome! at me from the other side of the line. It was kinda funny. I was like a celebrity haha. I'm not too big on the show anymore.
and yeah I think it's kinda silly to wear shirts that you have no idea what the print on them is about. I have a few band t-shirts that I still wear even though I don't listen to the band anymore and I feel like a tool. |
