It's sad to see Sonic being ruined time and time again, every reviewer has said Sonic Boom is worse than or on par with Sonic 06, you might want to stay away from this. At least Sega will have great games coming starting with Phantasy Star Nova, I played the demo and the gameplay and character creation were a lot better than PSO 2 and the Gigantes are neat to defeat, it will be a fun experience once I have the full game.

Anyone here read the book Console Wars? It's a rather fascinating look at Genesis era Sega and Nintendo, primarily from the perspective of an American Sega VP.

I was one of those who was utterly turned off by Sega of America's marketing in the 90's. For that whole decade and slightly beyond, their in your face, cooler-than-you attitude annoyed me to such a point that in January 2001, when Sega declared the end of hardware development and decided to focus on software... I was in a euphoric haze for about a week. Just the though of never having to see another obnoxious Sega ad was enough to elevate me to such a height.

Later I was able to learn more about the products that Sega made in Japan, and it just made me more upset at Sega of America. Such a waste.

Sega fan here, since the Genesis era. You've pretty much summed up how Sega fans see the company nowadays; in many ways, they're more level-headed than those in other video game fandoms, since they've come to terms with what can and can't be (no comment on Shenmue fans in particular, though). Perpetually saddened by Sonic (but happy whenever a good one, like Rush or Colors, comes along), have fond memories of playing Skies of Arcadia and others on my DC (the first gaming console I ever bought myself), put Valkyria Chronicles on the top of my Steam wishlist the day it was posted, shared jokes about Sonic crossovers and kart racers when they bought Atlus, and consider HIRO one of the best game music composers of all time (and still trying to figure out what the definitive releases of the After Burner and Space Harrier soundtracks are). The only way that Sega has ever, truly annoyed me is with hard-to-find Sega Direct exclusive soundtracks, but Sega Direct is gone now, so...

I haven't seen the anime yet, but Sega Hard Girls reminds me of two things. The first is P.S. Three-san, a 4koma about the previous gen consoles as idol singers and game publishers as music producers-- Sega-san was a pink-twintailed, leather jacket wearing bundle of energy who loved rice balls. She was also, naturally, my favorite character. Older consoles, including the Dreamcast and Saturn, make appearances as well. 8-4 (IIRC) translated some of the strips, as P.S. Triple, for a couple of iPhone apps, and 1UP hosted a selection of them, but all those translations seem to be gone now Sad

The second thing is Segagaga, which I'm surprised not to see mentioned here, since it and SeHa Girl seem to be cut from similar cloth.

Non-Sega related, glad to hear the CTHCC sequel's going to be out in English soon! I'll have to replay the first one for the new translation-- and to try for the best ending, which I wasn't able to get last time.

Man, I'm not gonna lie: Sonic Boom is straight-up terrible.

The only kind of interesting thing is does is that it designs levels in a way where there are different paths to an objective depending on the character you use, but that's about it...

(it's vaguely amusing to run around and see where your partner is relative to where you are in a stage)

The game runs terribly (which is annoying considering that Lost World was pretty responsive and I was at least expecting something that plays comfortably along the lines of that).

I was playing with my friend and they actually glitched out of the stage and they were in limbo for like 3-5 minutes until I checkpoint spawned them.

I don't think we have the energy to actually finish the game >_>

I read somewhere that a certain video game company could still stay a float due to the incomes made by pachinko machines. I forgot who it was though, my gut's telling me Namco Bandai or Sega.

Shame the Sonic Boom titles are a mess. I don't care about the games but the fact that a television show is accompanying the games worries me. I personally have no idea how the show is all I've heard is that it's "okay". There ends Nintendo's deal with Sega that they would would make 3 Sonic games for them (this case being Colours, Lost World and Boom) all of them having different results. What's next for the Blue Blur without this limitation?

On topic of Sega, adoring Beyonetta 2, the game feels like perfection. Don't know if I should pick up Persona Q. I love me some Shin Megami Tensei but I hated the limitations of only being limited to the fusing of a single Persona. Also with Pokemon, Smash Bros. Wii U and Christmas around the corner I'm on an even smaller budget.

Only Sega thing I had was the Game Gear, as me and my sister always had the Nintendo consoles growing up. Despite the thing being an absolute behemoth for a handheld console and eating up batteries like no tomorrow, the quality of the console itself left the Gameboy in the dust. The system had far better visuals than anything on the Gameboy ever had, but it just unfortunately lacked many great games. The only games hat I remember playing on it over and over again were Sonic and the Lion King game.

I did buy Valkyria Chronicles for steam the day it came out, despite the fact that I already own Valkyria Chronicles for PS3. It along with MGS4 and Uncharted were my first PS3 games I bought when I got the system. Hopefully it's successful on PC and Sega will decide to release VC 2 and 3 on PC.

At one point, as a loyal Sega-ite, I even called the company to say "Your ads are EMBARRASSING US!! Evil or Very Mad "
(It was when they were trying to go on the offensive against Nintendo Gameboy, comparing it, with their usual taste and restraint, to "creamed spinach", even when Gameboy's own ads were reduced to selling Tetris to commuting grownups.)
The in-your-face "SE-GA!!" was supposed to be "hip" and "Next Level", but made the Slim Jim ads seem urbane and sophisticated by comparison.

There was an image problem during the game wars at the time--
3DO's ad campaign, trying to appear "different" from Nintendo vs. Sega, showed how different gamers reacted to a situation (pulled over for a ticket, for ex.):
Nintendos were whiny and defensive, Segas were aggressive and combative, and 3DO's were cool hipsters in control...Apparently. Rolling Eyes
Sega-ites felt they were the smarter, more intelligent gamers than the Mario-bouncers, not sure how we got the "aggressive" image--Too many scrolling beat-em-up games on Genesis?

(But what killed off Sega hardware? Oh, that's easy:
The Saturn killing off SegaCD before it could make any more disk innovations, and Dreamcast killed off by Playstations playing Final Fantasy VII and DVD's. Next question?)

Then don't, bring it back to the store if you can. That 3 dollar guarantee at Gamestop is super helpful at times.

Ah, the Sega Genesis. Fond memories. Spent hours on Mortal Kombat 1-3, Sonic the Hedgehog and an assortment of other fun games when I should have been studying.

Eventually my parents forbid me to do my homework in my own bedroom.

I am getting a serious nostalgia kick from this Hi-sCoool! SeHa Girls show. Dreamcast's dial-up kills me.

I had a European Dreamcast (with the blue swirl), and had the likes of Headhunter, Metropolis Street Racer, Virtua Tennis, and both Shenmue titles on it. (Shenmue 2 was released in Europe for DC with Japanese audio only.)

I agree that the DC suffered badly from not having a DVD player. I remember many of the early PS2 purchasers in my old neck of the woods picking it up just for that reason - an option which Sega should have offered also.

Still, at least some of the franchises would live on, after a fashion, on other consoles: Headhunter getting a sequel on PS2 and Xbox (that I never got around to picking up, sadly), MSR re-emerging (minus the negative Kudos penalties) as the Project Gotham Racing series, and Shenmue 2 being brought to the Xbox also.


But on the subject of Sega personificiations, I recall that Sega were at least peripherally involved when the first Hyperdimension Neptunia game was published. All of the Planeptune CPUs shown across the various Nepgames since (Neptune, Nepgear, Plutia, and Uzume) have each had a certain Sega inspiration in mind.

That said, I would like to see both Neptunia's Uzume and SeHa Girls' Dreamcast-tan shown in blue and red versions (each colour in place of the orange on their respective outfits), in order to represent the DC as it existed outside of Japan.

I'm flabbergasted that a company actually listened to people's feedback. If only CAPCOM could do that and re-release the Gyakuten Saiban series with a more proper translation. I suppose anythings possible.

As for Sonic Boom, I had my doubts the minute I saw the redesigns which has Knuckles looking like a steroid abuser. It also raised some flags when I saw that in Japan it was being marketed as Sonic Toon, and emphasizing it was a US take on the franchise, much like Final Fantasy Mystic Quest was called Final Fantasy USA in Japan. That's generally not a good sign when they have to preemptively do damage control by shifting the blame.

I got it digital using eShop monies I accumulated from that deluxe promotion Nintendo was running, so this isn't an option <_<

Not that money is an issue, but I'm fairly disappointed by the sudden lax quality.
