The thing is that BL is often a shoujo type and I don't see how her quitting shoujo works unless she's planning on doing a josei equivalent of BL.

The genre shojo is a sparkly manga for young to late teen girls that often has a heterosexual romance.

Well her wording doesn't sound grossly misogynistic at all. Well, good riddance actually. Her shoujo manga wasn't exactly great either, both in story or art. Yuck.

Also, someone needs to inform Mayu that she ain't that great drawing guys. Like she seems oblivious about that fact.

Uhm... because it doesn't? It really just sounds like she's more interested in a subject (male relationships) that she believes she could never fully understand. And she openly admits to not being happy with how she draws women anyway. I see nothing that implies contempt for women here.

Well, good luck to her, but to me BL is unappealing. Don't see why girls gush over guys kissing or doing it. If you're that obsessed, go and peep at two gay guys being together.

This coming from a woman.

Riiiiight, because that isn't creepy at all! If you can't get your yaoi/bl fix, go stalk some gay guys... seriously, this is not OK. Fiction is meant to satisfy that specific desire for things you want but can't have in real life. Plus, homosexual characters in yaoi/bl are extremly romantisized and fetishized, nothing like real homosexual people.

I personally don't like bl/yaoi either. I do want to see more queer characters, but not for the sake of sleazy porn. As an LGBTQ supporter, I want to see better portrayal of LGBTQ (and asexual) people.

Um, that would be illegal.

I think the key word here is "fantasy." She (and her readers) want a fantastical world full of unrealistic relationships between hot guys. No annoying, possibly threatening "rival" females involved. That does feel a bit misogynistic and sexist to me. I don't blame them, though, I blame the worst aspects of their culture (which, let's be honest, is just another aspect of a global, historical disregard for women). But it would be nice if female mangaka would try to develop interesting, strong female characters for their shojo manga.

I tend to agree with Ms. Lactobacillus yogurti. Both BL and GL don't exactly appeal to me either. I also don't get it. Why are there those who want to look at two guys or two girls kissing each other? And I'm a guy. That sort of thing doesn't work for me. I tend to go for the more traditional romances,i.e. boy/girl. As for Ms. Shinjo,I've never read her stuff anyway so I'm not really familiar with her.

I don't see the problem with actually drawing/writing fantasy stories about idealized gay relationships. I just don't want people assuming that this is how real gay relationships work. "Fantasy" is a pretty common word associated with Japanese BL manga, so at the very least, I don't think that many Japanese BL fans actually think this is how reality is. And that's good.
I mean, I don't necessarily suck at drawing males, but I certainly am better at drawing females. If I wasn't more determined to create something with a ton more substance and message to it, I would have no problem illustrating a manga that has girls just doing fantastical girly things.

Sounds like you are spinning it to make it look like misogynistic and sexist. BL isn't about showing the world how terrible women are supposed to be. That's misogyny. Just because she doesn't want to include females in her BL stories, means just that: she's not interested in such characters in these stories.

Plain and simple things, clearly stated, and yet an excuse for misogyny and sexism is always found. There's plenty of all-female groups that exclude males and nobody comes up with misandry and sexist claims, and rightly so because there's no such thing.

But here? Hah!

If you call this a culture of disregard, I don't know what to say.
