Hmm, this will be interesting. Have there been any VN (as in official translation such as this) kickstarters before? I know that Key and Clannad are beloved by fans of the anime adaptation but I'm not sure that there will be enough crossover for the VN.
Either way, I'm definitely down for the digital version of the game and possibly a physical copy of the OST. |

I hope the translation is as good as promised. I'm surprised they didn't get into agreement with the fans who previously translated the game for free, since the fan-translation was already widespread here and there.

They did, and they found that the translation was of poor quality. In fact, parts of it were even machine translated. Given that they are hiring professional translators, the quality should be much higher than the fan translation. |

There is one right now actually, in fact unsure why the article doesn't make mention of it since it is also Sekai Project doing it: WAS ~The Hourglass of Lepidoptera~ https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sekaiproject/bring-was-the-hourglass-of-lepidoptera-to-the-west Really apart from OEL VNs Sekai Project is the only one doing any though. They have successfully funded WORLD END ECONOMiCA and fault milestone one in the past. But yeah Clannad is the first 'big' title on Kickstarter, or will be if they ever get around to actually doing it instead of saying they will be doing it.
This is what I don't get about people saying that fansubs are 'better' than official ones. Fansubs in general are 'servicable', but otherwise are pretty poor quality. I guess they see that official subs usually do some amount of localisation, and think that means it is a worse translation. There are some fansubbers of course that are quite professional, but for the most part most aren't that good. So yeah although the fansubs have 'already done the work' usually it is not up to a usable standard. And in general for a good translator editing a poor quality script takes more time funnily enough than just doing a new job from scratch. That said a lot of 'professional' translations aren't much better. You get what you pay for in that regard unfortunately, and companies tend to skimp. |

How much more past the US$140k stretch goal would it cost for them to get Luci Christian, Shelley Calene-Black, Emily Neves, Hilary Haag, and Kaytha Coker?
Hell, in this day and age, would a physical release be worth the stretch goal in the first place? |

I'm pretty positive they won't do dubs. A lot of people still prefer physical release, you know? |

I knew some of the members from the original translation team. They did a good job. Even though I've played this many years ago, I will be full supporting this

Excellent news. I can't wait to have Clannad added to my steam library.

$100,000? Really? I love Clannad as much as the next guy, and I'd love a new translation, but what on earth could they possibly need all that money for?

Put my name on the waiting list, kinda broke at the moment but by the time the kickstarter is up I'll be working again (as I start back up after a 2 month exam break tomorrow, thank f*** because I used the last of my spending savings today) so I'm able to contribute.

Professional translators usually have a fixed fee for each line that needs to be translated. Considering how big the VN I'm not surprised they need this much to cover the TL work that consists of the biggest part of the budget. |

To clarify shawurai's comment above, let put some perspective on it; Word count of The Lord of the Rings trilogy; 473 000 Word count in Clannad; 1 290 000 Does it start to make sense now?... |

Given that they apparently have to pay extra for the Japanese language track, the number makes sense.
