So according to ANN anyone who enjoys this show is a rape apologist, because of a 7 seconds scene that isn't even rape. Good to know.

No, it is not according to ANN, but some commenters have implied such.

Reading these reviews fills me with a sense of bizarre amazement. Amusement, too.

Contrary to the other contributors in this thread I will not debate the actual content of Cross Ange and whether or not it's misogynist. In my opinion it clearly is, regardless of what was and wasn't rape. I'm also not going to talk about whether Ange adequately tackles touchy subjects like discrimination. I will, however, add that I don't consider this torture porn, simply because actual torture porn is much more drastic. Have any of the reviewers seen movies like Hostel? Evidently not, and so they should refrain from using established terminology.

Instead I would like to say that these reviewers have the wrong hobby and/or job, depending on how much time they devote to ANN reviews. Applying Western concepts of gender equality to anime is incredibly pointless. The Japanese will not care. They will not stop making anime like this just because some social justice warriors in the West are waving the war flag.

You're not the primary audience of this show. You're just people who, for a fee, are permitted to watch it. If the reviewers dislike watching sexist content, then the only smart course of action would be to cease watching anime, because most anime for a male audience is sexist to one degree or another.

Likewise, expecting the Japanese to have a fair and balanced opinion on discrimination when the country has never come to grips with its own past or dealt with discrimination issues rampant in its contemporary society is completely absurd. Cross Ange will not treat the subject of "subhumans" with dignity. Having the expectation that it would or might is a pipe dream, especially when the country is slowly moving towards the right.

Ultimately this boils down to whether it makes sense to apply Western standards to something that isn't Western. I think it's a waste of time. You can take Cross Ange for what it is and see if you can look past the aspects that you dislike to find something you do, or you can ignore it for lack of compatibility.

Writing yourself into a rage lambasting it is utterly fruitless.

I agree 100%.

So Cross Ange has a cavity search that was shot in a questionable way, and that brings up misogyny, but Sword Art Online can have an attempted rape scene, a caged up Asuna that also had implied tentacle rape, and tied up in a provocative way, and no one calls misogyny of that? Look, I'm not gonna defend the scene. In fact, it sort of felt like a form of pseudo-poetic justice, considering spoiler[ that Ange told that mother that she should have another child after they take away her daughter for being a Norma ].

The show is fan service heavy. Yes, this is true, but consider this: How many mainstream popular anime have fan service (I'm including man service in this.)? This has been one episode people, give it a couple more before you decide if you will watch it. That is only fair right?

There's a 200 page thread somewhere in this forum where this was discussed to the point it became insufferable (I'm pretty sure people are still arguing about it whenever they get the chance). Heck, you can go to this season's daily review of episode 13 of SAOII where the reviewer touches exactly on that. So no, SAO doesn't get a pass for its crap either, if that's what you're suggesting

It's not the place of art to make moral arguments, so judging it on its moral validity isn't relevant to its quality as a piece of art. I disagree with all of the criteria the negative reviewers used to justify their arguments against this show, but I also don't care about this show and won't follow it.

It'll be covered by daily streaming reviews.

Wow! Just happened to check out the new anime preview while eating lunch and saw the chuckle-worthy reviews of this anime.

THANK YOU, ANN Reviewers, for your fiery moral outrage, drenched in the "Sturm und Drang" angst you suffered while being visually lambasted with this lesson in turpitude! God's, you have suffered!

THANK YOU, outraged respondents, for spilling your flatulent horror and profanation over the barbarism depicted. God's, you have suffered!

I THANK YOU because your fine prose; nay, insightful philosophies, have convinced me to BUY the blu-ray, and I HAVEN'T even SEEN this anime yet! Where's the pre-order button? Gimme!

When it comes to finding the anime I WANT TO WATCH, I can always come here and read the ANN reviews for anime THEY DON'T WANT TO WATCH. The more responses and reviews by the lemmings giving the ANN reviewers an "Amen!" confirms that, "DEAR LORD! I NEED THIS ANIME NOW!"

PS: Please provide lists of all objectionable content before your written reviews so I can save myself the time of speed-reading drivel. GOD BLESS!

I second this!

I as well pick my must watch shows of the season by looking through the preview guide thinking "hmm, what are they butthurt about this season? Oh, this one must be good!"

If y'all just created a list of anime that offended you, it would save me a lot of trouble!

When it comes to animation quality, storytelling, character development, and the soundtrack, it pays to listen to the ANN reviews, but the other baggage they bring to it, well, its like you two said. If it is not politically correct, then it is a must buy or at least a must watch.

If you want family friendly fare, then watch Ghibli.

Oh man, those ratings were the best thing about reading this article. Agree with most of the reviewers too. Never have I seen such a lack of tack when using something as controversial as rape.

I believe this anime can be more than what first seem. No sane person believe that special scene "Will be popular and people will like it." It is sure disturbing. That is suppose to shock the audience. It is because much like Ange, audience too Jaded. Everything too cinematic. Very sensitive subject. Even in more raw and "brick on head" nature than Kill-la-kill.

Also maybe as an statement that they will go that far for a story. They ready to cross the line with The "Project Ange". But, how dare they are going this far. HOW DARE!

(And I hate this show because I am human. Sure I not like a norma. I am human being. Those who like it is "Misogynist Monster", not human with the power of money.. I mean mana. Who care non-human woman-hater say about anime. Not me.)

For those easily disturbed, run away. It tick lot of people. I will stay because if I am right, this anime is batshit insane. It may have great potential. For those who hate it, I understand because sure this anime know how to tick people.
