Even though the MSRP for Gunbuster 2 is high, RightStuf has it for 26.99. But still, that's pretty expensive. Sad

And that's only because its in the Weekly Specials. Thought this could be a case where it is there permanently (or at least really frequently) because TRSI realizes that now one is going to pay anywhere near full price for it. But its still more than I normally pay for DVDs. Because I rarely buy outside of studio sales, I usually pay around $16 for a DVD. On the rare occasions I buy at Best Buy, I pay about $21. For twice the number of episodes and a dub.

I'd like to get Gunbuster 2 someday, but it won't be until I can get it for $8 or less per episode.

I won't buy either Gunbuster until I can get them with an English dub.

I believe in supporting the legit companies and that fansubs are a last resort. But what Bandai is doing is patently ridiculous. There is no way in hell I am paying, what, sixty bucks for what amounts to the unaltered R2 release with about three days' worth of localization effort?

This is where I put my foot down. I am never again going to reduce myself to buying sub-only releases. Either I get a proper English dub for my money, or I'm gonna find me some fansubs. (Note to self: redownload Tekkaman Blade. Screw Media Blasters...I wish I could personally throttle every Voltron zombie in the United States...)

Actually the cheapest I could find shipped was DVD Pacific for just under $26.50. Which is still way too expensive for me, hell I just bought Le Chevalier D'eon for $21 at best buy. It's four episodes long has a dub and also very nice historical notes, there are some staff interviews among other things and this is a series that's just finished it run in Japan at the end of February. That for me is a good buy, about 5 dollars an episode and a very slick slipcover for the front of the dvd.

It's really sad to hear that the subs are even all that good, it's one thing to have a dub that isn't the best ever. But when careless errors are a sub only release there is really no excuse for that. I think it probably would of been better to release this series in one giant box, give it the super treatment like Patlabor and Gunbuster and I think things would of been better in the end.

I'd still encourage people to check this one out as a rental if you're signed up through NetFlix or RentAnime, though, because it's plenty good enough to be worth seeing.

Perhaps someday I'll sign up for NetFlix or RentAnime. But for now, my dad is only signed up with Blockbuster's online thingy and I don't think Blockbuster stocks much anime. I suppose I could check though, once all three volumes are out.

I thought I was the only one who saw though that whole fascade! My brother, we need to fight against the Votron menace! You with your Tekkaman Blade and me with my GaoGaiGar, we'll fight 'm my bro!

But seriously, after forking the import costs and whatnot (I live in the UK), them screwing off the whole deal after volume 5 (Oh, LoL, you've payed this much but screw you) just basicly put me off supporting anything from Media Blasters ever gain.

That's what I am going to do, I've got Gunbuster and Gunbuster 2 on my list of things to see. Which is find by me, I get to watch the shows/movie I want to see without forking over mega dollars.

Blockbuster online is expanding their anime rentals by leaps and bounds, although they still have a lot of room for improvement. I am sure you could get a lot of anime from it if your dad will share his rentals. Smile
They do have Gunbuster listed as an anime they have...you will need to make sure they have it all, sometimes they don't have all teh disks in a series. I think they need someone who works for them as a specialist for just anime, but hey, I am probably biased.

There will never be an English dub of the first Gunbuster. The original sound masters have been lost, so there is no separate dialogue/sound effects track, so unless they recreate an entire new soundtrack (which would be a really egregious thing to do), we're stuck with sub-only forever on that release. It's too bad, really, as I know the no-dub thing scares a lot of people away from it.

Gunbuster 2, however, is a different story, and I do agree that it's pretty ridiculous of Bandai Visual to not dub it.

Actually Gunbuster 2 isn't really a retelling as it connects to Gunbuster by spoiler[explaining what happens in the time period after Noriko and Kazumi use the black hole bomb and even ties directly into the original series by showing them coming back (like at the very end of Gunbuster)]

Just out of curiosity, is there a reason the titles like this and Kashimashi (which is its official US name, not sure why it's being listed as Kasimasi) have "Sub.DVD 1"? I don't recall seeing it in the past for sub only reviews here.

Haha. You actually still believe that.

The word I used was "reimagining" not "retelling," which it clearly isn't. I should also point out that, at the time I wrote that review (and the upcoming one vol. 2), I hadn't seen volume 3 yet (which also now has a review pending). Probably would have written certain parts of this review differently if I had, but hey, it's only supposed to be a review about the first two episodes anyway.

Do you have some irrefutable evidence that it's not true or something?
