I've almost gotten in a bunch of times and then decided not to
is it worth my time?

Yes, yes, yes.
Banana Fish is my favorite shoujo manga. It's emotionally involving, sweet, caring, exciting (in more ways than one) and made me cry. It's got fantastic characters, very good writing and while some people have problems with the art work I've always liked it. The relationship between Eiji and Ash is one of the loveliest and one of the most touching ones I've ever seen, in any story in any media.

Those people are idiots. Seriously, though, there's nothing at all wrong with the art in Banana Fish, it's just very non-shojo for a shojo series. It's the more realistic style of, say, a Katsuhiro Otomo, and there's nothing wrong with that.
I second the recommendation. I haven't read much of the series, but I love what I've read.

I highly recommend the series also, it's great if you want something a bit more hardboiled but still touching at the same time.

yes.
i remember it in animerica extra.
and pulp.
but yeah.
its a good series.
and the art style is wicked realistic.
i remember getting into it because it reminded me of katsushiro otomo and akira.
