So, Western fans are physically incapable of liking moe, only Japanese otaku can. And Western fans can only like AKIRA or other similar stuff. That's what's being said here. I'm getting sick of this attitude that you can only be one kind of fan; Daryl Surat keeps mentioning in his AWOcast something about "fans of our generation" when mentioning older titles, as if you not allowed to be a fan throughout the decades and crossing many genres. I can love AKIRA and Non Non Biyori, Megazone 23 and Girls Und Panzer, and I'm not about to explode like a Pinto from some kind of internal conflict. |

When you start having shit like this on your KS page officially, then it's clear that your message is that anime is in dire trouble and only a generic sci-fi action story can save it. I was kind of excited for this to happen a few weeks ago, but if this the garbage attitude that they'll take on, forget it, screw this project and all involved. This is exactly why people laughed and cheered at Fractale's failure. Without that fight choreograph, Sword of the Stranger would have been nothing. |

The guy clearly only likes sci-fi/cyber-punk anime, judging from his responses.
I think it is stupid to think "moe" anime is bad and that only serious and edgy shows can be good, let alone saying that liking both is impossible. I seriously can't understand why it seems like people hate comedy nowadays. It's even dumber that people are actually complaining about the fact that a large number of cartoons coming out are comedy. Even then, there are still many serious shows released every season. That said, what he says about production committees only thinking about Japan is completely true. Of course people in the west can like "moe", but they don't think about them when making the anime. I'd like to see more efforts such as this and Space Dandy. It would be nice if an anime aired at primetime, dubbed, on the same week as Japan. Even in the "Golden Age of Nerds" where video games, sci-fi and comic book heroes are completely mainstream, anime is still very niche. I'm trying to wrap my brain around how a single 22 minute product can claim to keep any kind of industry alive by itself.
Why is this bad, exactly? Take a look at the modern game industry, comic book industry, and geek TV industry, and tell me you actually want that for anime with a straight face. Those mediums essentially died once they hit mainstream status. Creativity evaporated at the sight of the mainstream, general audience dollar. Comic books now ape the mainstream movies, and the movies themselves are insultingly dumbed down. Video games now target the 10-21 male demographic with the same 3 types of games and anything else is shut down in pro-production. TV nerdom is pretty much defined by Big Bang Theory and trendy "geek" poster children like Wil Wheton and Felicia Day. I'd rather none of that happen to anime. Though really it's financially impossible to aim anime to a western audience outside of projects like this. Kickstarter exists, yes, but it can realistically fund are 22 minute OVAs. Once you start talking 13, 26, 52, and 100+ series, it's going to be impossible. -Stuart Smith |

I don't want to be 'that guy' casting doubt on the quality of something which isn't even out yet but and I can respect shows with mature themes and a dark tone like Fate/Zero. But I honestly really despise that way of thinking. Same goes for his opinion on English Dubs. I'm a white male Australian whose never even set foot in Japan and a huge Dragonball Z fan since I was about 8 or 9. But with all the samey looking gorefests and battle shonens that the western community hyped up it made me think that those sorts of shows (As well as Ghibli and porn) were anime in nutshell. I didn't think anime was worth getting into until about late 2011. The show that convinced me? K-ON. The shows that made me want to seek out even more? Haruhi Suzumiya and Lucky Star. How did I initially find those shows? Through the English dubbed versions. And to add to that my single most favourite show I've watched as it aired was Love Live Season 2. I like that he's trying to branch out to a bigger audience but the distinctly Japanese feel is what many people like about anime. Sure a show like Baccano is good in its own right but you might as well just watch Snatch or a good Tarantino Movie instead. If you want more shows like Monster in anime just go watch Breaking Bad or something. It's certainly a better series than any anime I've ever seen. |

Alright...
I've no problem with anime shows that step outside of the "cutie" realm being made, but it really gets tiring seeing the old "Moe is killing the anime industry" message being soapboxed over and over. Heck, I've watched Cowboy Bebop and I enjoyed it to its very fullest. However, I also had fun watching many anime shows involving characters of the cute kind, and I don't trade that away in favor of watching a show that's solely about mature-themed action. I am going to try to give this show a chance when it's all done, but the "Keep Anime Alive" slogan isn't making this any simpler... |

Are they saying that, specifically, outside of a joke people are taking too seriously? It just sounds to me like they want to do something that isn't in the same vein as 90% of new series, which just so happens to not be the producers' preferred form of story. |

I love this guy! Completely agree with everything said about the modern anime industry.
I think many of you are over reacting to his answers. He's just saying that the ratio between moe and other genres is too uneven. Not that he doesn't like some of those shows, I'm sure he does. I thought people would support this type of mentality. But maybe that's because I think that moe IS ruining the anime industry? Maybe not that extreme, but it is taking away from the variety. And I do like some of them. I like a show if it's good by my tastes, I'm not so shallow as to dismiss one just because of its art. But too many are being churned out to the point where I don't even bother with a lot of them. I know a lot of you want to defend your precious moe by trashing this by labeling it as "generic dark and gritty sci-fi," but that doesn't really make sense to me considering that none of you have seen it. Because it doesn't even exist yet. I'd like to see anime move past the moe trend. Because let's face it, its biggest market are Japanese otaku. At least, that's who they're aiming for anyway. |

Don't we get a few sexy action girls series every year? Tokyo ESP and GITS Arise are currently airing. Kill la Kill wasn't too long ago either. Could even throw in stuff like Sabagebu if you really wanted to. I guess I don't see what makes this all that unique.

Everything you just listed was funneled through various companies inproduction committe format and crafted off the backs of pre-existing works/reputations. This is one team's vision and an completely new IP(despite having reputable talent attached to it). |
