^ Not necessarily. It's an intimidation factor, they're trying to prevent people from uploading by scaring them off. They could however prevent more downloads by going after the bigger uploaders / websites.

They also might be just doing their jobs by enforcing the law.

There might not be any bigger offenders in Ishikawa Prefecture.

I'm just now reliesed how much we take websites like justdubs and mangafox for granted, most of us poor people who don't have money can watch subs and dubs for free, yet in japan it sounds like it's hard as hell to get stuff like that online.

You don't think people in Japan pirate? Ha ha ha ha h ...let me catch my breath a little ha ha ha ha ha ha

Take a cross section of peers of torrents on the common anime index sites, half or more IPs are japanese. Most raws have mostly only Japanese IPs. A large part of the uploaders are Japanese...

Who do you think uploads all TV broadcast versions of airing anime fansubbers use?

Who do you think uploads most rips of discs?

Who do you think uploads most ddls of anime found on the net?

...And that's only the torrent side of things which is easy to go after, Winny/Share/Perfect Dark, ftp, irc, streaming etc notwithstanding...

This is goddamn ridiculous. What are they going to do? Throw him in jail, the place where murderers, rapists, and actually criminals go? Fine him thousands of dollars when the volume he uploaded only costs a few?

Piracy isn't the great evil that corporations want you to think and how people "punish" it does not fit the "crime."

Well it's pretty much like stealing a book from a store. Just because it's more accessible and easy to do without getting caught doesn't make it a "lesser" crime. He should be fined.

They don't have enough resources to catch every cyber thief. They do it every now and then to remind people that uploading copyright material is a crime.

More like reading a book at a bookstore.

They do have the resources, but there would be public outcry if they started putting people in jail for such a stupid reason. It is not the copyright police, they have better things to do.

Wait for the damn legal release?

Chances are he'll issue an apology, get told "Don't do it again," and be sent on his way.

Disproportionate retribution much?

Well, in hindsight, he kind of deserves it since he can't pirate worth a shit. He's like a bank robber who doesn't bother to wear a mask. A real criminal mastermind, that one.

I would find it an ironic arrest if he was uploading One Piece because it's being arrested for pirating a pirate series.

What? Reading the book wouldn't exactly be illegal, it would just be like... loitering. Stealing it is. Piracy is stealing. You're just stealing data and not something physical.

Reading a manga or book at a store is enjoying it without paying for it, no difference from downloading said book or manga from the internet.

Downloading said manga without permission is stealing it. There is no sweeting talking, law binding way around it.

That's like saying somebody livesteaming Toonami is perfectly legal, when it's not, you're putting copyrighted material that takes millions to produce and thousands to distribute on the internet for free.

I don't see how people call themselves fans of certian artists and authors, yet absolutely refuse to pay them for their work.
