is it riddled with flaws. absolutely, but its still interesting enough in at least the reverse harem genre to warrant at least a rental shelf. though the abusive men isnt one of them cause at least their not complete airheads like in some reverse harem series. And it makes things a little interesting since i haven't heard of one reverse harem series where some of the men are serious jackasses. |
Amnesia definitely doesn't deserve a rental shelf rating. Just cause it's different, doesn't mean it's good.

Honestly, I don't get why the "it was better in the original!" argument gets thrown around so much when discussing the adaptation.
Example: I think we can all agree the Eragon movie was bad. The book made more sense (whether it was a good book or not is up for debate), and overall told a better story. But does anyone dispute the claim that the Eragon *movie* was bad? No!
So why the heck does the claim "the game was better" hold any weight when discussing the ANIME, which is a whole different beast? Heck, Bamboo even mentions that if you like sadistic/dominant men, you might like Amnesia. But the vast majority of folks? Who likely have not played the game? Yeah, it's not worth it for them.
P.S. As a side note, I fail to see why otome anime should be held to different standards than regular anime.

I consider myself a fan of the reverse harem genre. I've at least dipped my toes in most of the stuff that's out there (though I did draw the line at DL). Neo Angelique Abyss is one of my favorite anime. But Amnesia was a train wreck. I watched it as it was being released and it took me the first 5 or so episodes to even have a clue, and things just spiraled downhill from there. By the end, I was wishing one of her deaths would just stick! Even for mindless, silly fluff, I do have standards, and at least this season's offerings have been enjoyable.

The outfits in Amnesia always struck me as being taken from a Kingdom Hearts game. The only thing I liked about Amnesia was the animation. I have to admit that I did kind of like the outfits though.

AoT did a great job building. It didn't go straight into fighting the titans, it gave them time to train, you get to know the characters and their personal connections. It also had fantastic music. Really, it just fits so perfectly and escalates every scene. I only watched half the series, so the second I get the blurays I am going to watch the crap out of the whole thing.
Also I never got around to playing the first Devil Survivor... I may have to do that soon.

Honestly, you watch a show about sadistic vampires and you expect it to be tame, come on. It's like watching SnK and expecting people not to be devoured. |
The torture porn was not the problem for Diabolik Lovers. All the vampires were evil, and were unredeemable. The show should have ended with Yui getting her revenge against her vampiric tormentors, or at the least tragically dying while taking them with her. Since that didn't happen, Diabolik Lovers failed hard, unless you like watching weak victims being turned into an eternal victim. Based on the review, Amnesia sounds like more of the same.

Subaru was all right. ;O
Really, I don't think DB or Amnesia were supposed to be good anime. They were made because the games were popular and the companies KNEW fangirls would watch for their favorite bishies from the game.
In other words, they just milked the otome game franchise. I don't think they cared about putting effort into the projects; they were like "bishies, yes, that's all we need to make money".
Which kind of sucks...because as we all know, anime adaptations of bishoujo games have been wonderful, bringing in male and female fans alike.
Why can't otome games get the same treatment? Well, I heard La Cordia wasn't too bad...but it didn't really grab me at the first episode.
I think the answer is because "nobody gives a crap". Anime targeted at girls almost ALWAYS gets the short end of the stick. There are some really lovely ones out there...but on the whole, Japan doesn't think an audience outside of the target will watch, unlike with shounen/seinen that everyone will watch so they're like "who cares?".
And it really blows.

I've watched DL; I enjoyed it (not sure what that says about me, but meh), but I wouldn't really consider it a "good" anime by most standards. It was entertaining but also suffered from having an idiotic main character and quite a few guys that I wanted to punch in the face, but that was to be expected. I think I may have watched the first episode of Amnesia but will probably go back and see how I feel about it later. The review was hilarious, though. I do like Neo Angelique Abyss and found Uta no Prince-sama to be extremely cheesy but also highly enjoyable. The only reverse harem I watched this season was Kamigami no Asobi, which I loved. I'm really hoping it gets a 2nd season. If Uta-pri can get 3 seasons, Kamigami should at least be able to get 2.

They weren't all evil. I actually liked Shuu and Subaru. My main complaint with Diabolik Lovers was that the main character kept acting like an idiot. I mean she even got a chance to leave and was like, "Nope! Gonna stay and keep getting harassed." That was only compounded by the fact that Subaru gave her a knife specifically made to kill vampires, and she never even bothered to use it. I was so hoping she would at least use it on the "Bitch-chan" boy, but nope. I was just mentally face palming over some of her choices.
