Are gravure idols held to the same impossible purity standards as other (non-gravure) idols? I assume so. I guess the fantasy is that only the viewer is privy to the video in question.

Wages are high too (not in anime and manga though) and while media and property are expensive (specially in Tokyo), food and other necessities are not.

Gravure comes in different flavors so it depends what you're into. There's ones more taseful than that Sweet Melons #8 one you saw. They have the idols talking and reciting their lives and childhood experiences, dreams, how they got into the business, and other autobiographic topics while they're modeling. It can be pretty intimate at times. Others can be them doing funny skits and stuff. Kazuki Shimizu's idol DVD had him acting clearly similar to his role on Super Sentai which was pretty funny when they take advantage of an actor's known roles.
Admitted, I usually only care for gravure of actors I know and like, so that probably has an affect on me being invested into their stuff. Girls I know from programs like Super Sentai or Kamen Rider for example. What's nice about that is Toei sometimes puts out official gravure DVDs to capitalize on this. Mao Ichimichi and Kazuki Shimizu aka Gokai Yellow and Gokai Green got some put out under Toei's label, and they ran an advertismeents for their DVDs on some of the Super Sentai DVDs, but there's other gravure by them who are not under Toei's label and under other agencies.
