As the titles says I'm interested in knowing if I"s is just another romantic comedy in a long line of romantic comedy. I was browsing my Borders and I've flipped through it before and read a chapter here or there but I've never given it a thorough reading. I was hoping you guys could mention some of the strong and weak points of the manga. Is it more comedy then drama? Does the story grab you or is it weak? Just looking for some basic opinions and ideas about the manga. I have read titles such as Ai Yori Aoshi, Oh My Goddess, and Suzuka. I consider those more focused on the romance and drama. Then there are titles that focus more on the comedy I think such as Love Hina, and A.I. Love you. Where would I"s stack up compared to titles such as these? Any feedback is appreciated.

(I'm not much of a critic, but I'll try my best here.)
I think that it focuses more on the romance and drama, though not to the extent of say, Suzuka. Meaning that while there is more romance/drama, there is a fair bit of comedy thrown in.
The main character (Ichitaka) is likeable enough. He has his moments, though there will be times where you'd wish he didn't do some of the stupid things you might see him do. But he certainly isn't as aggravating to read/watch as Yamato Akitsuki.
The story might seem to drag on at times, though it certainly does pick up during later volumes, especially during the latter half of the series, with the introduction of a new character. This, I won't spoil.
I also think that the secondary characters aren't really fleshed out well enough and only seem to be there when some group event takes place, with the exceptions of Jun and Teratani, but that might be stretching it a bit. The former is very friendly and gives the main character good advice though he doesn't get nearly enough screen time (which I think he deserves), while the latter also gives out good advice (when it really matters) and provides a good portion of the comedy relief, yet his personality isn't expanded much past the "perverted friend who can provide useful advice" type, with the exception of one instance in Vol. 9.
The artwork is pretty impressive, IMO. The girls look quite attractive, and the backgrounds look pretty nice too. However, if it matters to you, a majority of the manga is edited, with the nipples being edited out of all volumes except Vols. 5, and from Vol. 11 onwards.
The story did indeed grab me, but this is moreso because I can relate to it on a personal level, so your mileage may vary. the plot's not all that original, though
In conclusion, it certainly has its faults, but it can prove to be enjoyable. Now that I've read what I just wrote, it seems a little negative, though I would definitely give it a shot, at least. If the option is available to you, try borrowing the first few volumes through the library, or a friend.
On another note, I always thought that AMG was more of a romantic comedy, though my only experience with the series is through the 2 seasons of the TV series, so I don't know if the manga goes any deeper (in which it probably does, given its length).

I was always curious about this title as well, because it seemed to me that this was a pretty popular title with a large fanbase. I remember it because of the girl on the cover of the volumes looked kind of scary to me, almost like a child.
Anyway, my question is, is this manga primarily aimed at a male audience? You mentioned nudity, but is it more like fanservice or does it serve another purpose. Would it appeal to a female reader? (Such as myself, a 21 year old female college student).
I've never read any of the titles that psycho 101 mentioned, as those always seemed to me romantic comedies but aimed for a male audience instead of your typical shoujo romantic comedies. I hope I'm making sense.

Ningensei ,while many are aimed at males, and maybe these two as well, I know lots of women who've enjoyed and related to Oh My Goddess and Suzuka. They both can be enjoyable for both women and men. I'd give them a looking over next time you're in the bookstore.

I"s is definitely aimed at a male audience. There is a good deal of fanservice throughout the series, which holds meaning within its context, but I give I"s the edge over series like Suzuka and Ai Yori Aoshi, mainly because the romance isn't bogged down by a harem of female characters that disrupt the flow of the story.
Really, your interest in the series may be limited by how much fanservice you care to see. The series does avoid being exrtraordinarly frustrating like a lot of romances, however, but like Buster Blader 126 said, the series doesn't really pick up steam until about halfway through. I"s does have its share of heart and touching moments admist its hormone driven fanservice.

Actually Ningensei, you would probably enjoy OMG, I think it's a pretty well done series for being aimed at a male audience. It's a bit on the comedic side, but nothing that you would consider perverted. There is a little bit of fanservice (on Urd's side), but it isn't like Love Hina or one of those comedies. You can trust me on that one

"Back in the day" (the mid-90s) when OMG! first appeared, it was one of VERY few titles with a large female fanbase. It's definitely a book that can appeal to ALL readers, unlike more fanservice-y titles like Love Hina. I highly recommend giving it a try.

I's happens to be my 2nd favourite Romantic Comedy and even though the beginning was quite dull, but there's plenty to enjoy later on in the manga series. Throughout this manga it mostly focused on romantic drama than the comedy that mostly came from Ichitaka's perverted friend. One of the best things about the manga was the appearance of Izumi because she actually did become a huge obstacle to Ichitaka's & Iori's love. Like it was said before, the one main thing this manga lack was more developments with the other characters, because I really wanted Ichitaka's perverted friend to have more screen time and not just for the advice he keeps giving.
The title of my favourite Romantic Comedy is taken by the manga Ichigo 100%. This one started off with more comedy than romance, but it later became very dramatic and with the later volumes having no comedy at all. Even though it 1st seems like the average school life harem Rom/Com, it does manage to pull away from the usual cliches after the 1st couple volumes of the manga and show a lot of interesting relationships love triangles outside the huge love pentagon and of course the character developments. I like it because some of the characters personalities actually changed a bit during their 3 years and there's plenty of emotional moments in those 3 years.
There are still some romantic comedies that I'm gonna read like: Oh! My Goddess, Midori no Hibi & Kimagure Orange Road. So maybe one of these might become my favorite

Thanks to everyone who responded to my post! I will definitley take them into consideration and I think I will add Oh My Goddess to my list of manga to buy and read. It seems that this one can appeal to female readers as well, since many of you have vouched for its content, but I'm still not sure about I"s though but I'll keep it in the back of my mind for reconsideration.

Well, you know some of my tastes pretty well, fighterholic, and I trust your advice! I'm sure I won't be disappointed.
However, I remember from reading some topics involving OMG (I think it was the one about Belldandy being "perfect" but we don't need to go into that here) that there is a strange pattern to the manga releases. Or that they are re releasing some volumes. How should I go about buying this? Which versions should I get?
Sorry, if I have turned this thread off topic! I'll stop now.

Actually Love Hina is enjoy by lots of girls as well. I don't know why though, but I've seen lots of female Love Hina fan throughout my forum posting years.
As for I's, I read it a long time ago and only for the fanservice. LOL
It wasn't nothing special.

I"s definitely is a great read!! I would recommend it to a lot of people who don't mind fan service being in there
I love his artwork so much! and the stories he writes are always entertaining. I enjoyed Video Girl Ai much more than I"s though. And Shadow Lady is fun

I picked up the first volume a while back (because I really liked the anime DNA² and and also the manga Video Girl Ai). I've yet to sit down and actually start reading it, but I will eventually. My sister has read the 1st volume though and she actually liked it. She keeps bugging me about why I still haven't read it after so many months of it sitting on my shelf. Thanks to this thread though, I think I'll finally make time to read it.

I used to hear I"s being praised as a great shonen romance and something special. While the art is good (aside from Viz's censoring), it's just another shonen romance. There's really nothing special about it.

Yeah, I guess that is true. Heck, a girl that used to work at the comic shop I go to got into manga by reading Love Hina, although she sounded almost embarassed to admit it now.

I"S has some of the most excellently drawn panty shots, tight jean shots, and general butt shots of really anything ever committed to paper, that is enough to get it.
