I thought Ganta's initial reaction made sense. He's minding his own business, then all his friends die and he's sentenced to life, not just in jail, but freaking Superjail. That will mess with anyone.
The series had a good premise and started well, but I will cop to ignorance of the later chapters.

I could never buy into the setting so that stopped me from enjoying it, yes sure they build a prison and have the prisoner kill each others…because, yes that makes complete sense. I guess my suspension of disbelief isn't very strong.

Quote: | Ganta's age is also a little of a sticking point, as middle school seems a little young for him to be able to cope as much and as well as he does. |
I remember when the anime came out, some people have criticized Ganta as being like the next whiny Shinji. That still just befuddles me, since we're talking about a middle-schooler who probably has the most realistic reaction when thrust into the situation he did, before learning he has to really fight to survive.
Since the anime left off on a hell of a non-ending cliffhanger, it's good to be able to follow a continuation of the story at all, and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens.

Is the localization any good, I wonder?
Seeing how this is from Viz, a company that can't even be expected to get the most basic references right, I'm figuring Ganta's declaration of war against the prison goes something like "I won't forgive this place and its rules!"
FUNi's dub was so damn good...it's localizations like those that make it hard for me to get into manga anymore, 'cause no one ever puts that same kind of care into making manga dialogue not sound like copy-and-paste-translated crap.

I only know this via the anime does anyone know of a follow up anime series to complete the story? The manga sounds interesting.

I'm not jiving with the comments above. I not only found Ganta to be a believable, likeable character, but that the series got better progressively, as more backstory was revealed.

I felt the earlier volumes were the best. I thought the series fell short when it tried to explain what was going on and that the ending dragged on.

I read the whole thing last year. It's a very good series.
This is coming from a SHOUJO fanatic...

F*CK NO.
Sadly, shoujo fans are the exact same way. Throw a girl into the worst scenario ever-she gets criticized for being "a crybaby".
People are...getting ridiculous. I don't think they want human characters anymore. They want soul-less, invincible creatures that do not have feelings because "emotions are for pussies".

I really enjoyed the beginning of the anime series but I found the pacing really failed it later on, as characters were introduced left, right, and center, with most of them clearly amounting to no more than cannon fodder.
It definitely felt like the anime was rushing to get through multiple volumes of the manga faster and cutting quite a bit, so I've been interested in the manga for some time. I definitely will check this out.
Question though - how graphic is the manga? The anime wasn't too bad but I have a feeling that what I was watching was the censored for TV version and that the end product would be a lot more brutal.

Thus far as of Volume 2, the manga really isn't much more graphic than the anime's content.

Having read up to vol. 5-6 iirc of Tokyopop's release, I'm definitely psyched to be able to actually finish the series and see what happens. That said, I'm a tad disappointed to see Yoh's name was again romanized as Yo. As a native English speaker I have to curb my first instinct to equate the spelling with the phrase instead of a person's name.
Glad to see some TP titles resurrected.

What drew me to the series in the first place was Kazuma Kondou's art because I am just in LOVE with his drawing style. That was probably one of the main reasons why I didn't enjoy the anime as much.
I'm so happy this is being released again and I can't wait to finish it! I can't believe some people think Ganta's whiny about his situation. Well I hope he is considering where he's at! The emotion in the story is what drove me to keep reading. I love the facial expressions and they're so natural and real. That's also why I love Alive. Both are great series as far as I've read (I've finished Alive, but not DMW).

I can't say that I ever felt Ganta was whiny - in fact, I thought he was a little too cool for a middle schooler. (Which is what I meant to say in the review; sorry if that wasn't clear.) Maybe he comes off more that way in the anime version? I haven't seen it, but I could see how adding voices could make him come off that way.

and shinji never go on an f bomb when he meets that psycho director.

I wouldnt necessary call that a negative. for one thing it was obvious that the designs for Shiro's body was mainly for the otaku doujin universe which is why she and that hard ass warden makina are the most popular female characters in the whole series.
Also there have been a lot more characters that was younger than ganta that have been involved in these types of storylines before. personally it fits him perfectly otherwise the whole story would completely fall apart and flat if he wasnt like that.
