it seems this series seems to be pretty popular for some.. however.. i thought it was rubbish. the characters were very unlikeable and the story really never explained itself (although, i wasn't interested enough to care)
so.. i want to know why so many folks dig. defend it! |

One word...manga. It's one of those cases where the anime finished before the manga was completed. As for the characters being unlikeable, maybe that was the whole point. It showed a pretty realistic outlook (in my opinion) of what humans would do to each other if presented with those certain horrific situations. Survival of the fittest perhaps?
Anyway, if you want a more complete story, check out the manga. |

The two episodes per release that ADV pulled turned me off from this series. I bought the first DVD on the off chance the series was phenomenal and worth collecting int his way. I finally bought the DVDs when the thinpaks were released and was surprised that they were not reformated to fit on six DVDs. I find two episodes per DVD a waste of space, and the wait between volumes more frustrating . Just this week I decided that I will not buy any Bandai Visual DVDs for the same reason.

Why don't you elaborate on what exactly it is you didn't enjoy about it. Don't ask us to defend a show, which is basically saying "hey that show you like sucks want to fight about it?" Honestly Gantz has a big hype around it because it was too graphic/sexual for TV and the fanboy love that....it's a terrible show, and it's not like Gonzo completely ruined anything. Manga has become completely stupid with the amount of things that just keep coming out of nowhere just solve a plot line. . If you want to read what people think about Gantz try using the search feature, there's plenty of discussions based on Gantz, spanning from it's Manga, to if there will be second season, and what did the ending mean? animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=35142&highlight= animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=34142&highlight= animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=30564&highlight= animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=28854&highlight= animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=24884&highlight= animenewsnetwork.com/bbs/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=22658&highlight= |

I think Gantz probably appeals more to a somewhat more mature audience, who does not mind the slow pacing and appreciates a complex cast of characters that are well anchored in reality, as opposed to bug-eyed anime stereotypes. To this crowd, Gantz is mainly about character development and the realism of the characters themselves. (also, this crowd probably doesn't care about the format of the discs) I suppose there is also the other fan group, who cares nothing about the things I just mentioned, but mostly like the series for the blood and gore and big tits. I can't speak for them though. |

I wouldn't stress so much for the realism of the series. Isn't there a girl in it that acts like a dog to the main character or something? Been a while since I've seen part one.
I loved it because it's quite sick. The person who wrote that was quite perverted. Reminded me of Cube, with more action (I'm speaking about a Canadian live-action movie, here, not sure if Cube is real popular elsewhere). |

i wonder what you mean by mature audiences.. it seems perfect for teenage boys who only want boobs and blood. i don't really see much character depth in here.. unless by character depth you mean the guy wanting to take advantage of the girl.. then.. sure... that can be character depth...
and it's not like im picking a fight.. just because i despised the anime doesn't mean im critiquing anyone's taste.. im just curious as to why some would think it was good. since i can't figure it out. and if you want slow pace i would recommend something far different then this. like.. bartender, monster or aria. but that's me. |

I said realism of the characters, in the sense that they act like real people. And yes, that's why it is also pretty "sick," because that's how people are. |

I meant of the characters also, cause even if some act normal (like the grandma and her grandson), the girl does not. The guy is also quite perverted, I don't think most people would act like him...

I think most guys are perverted, and Kei would probably want to get some action knowing that there's a chance he might die, it's still not an excuse for all the other things that happen in this series. |

Gantz is realistic in a similar way to how Akagi (an anime about mahjong. Kinda like a gritty version of Hikaru no Go) is realistic. The characters are somewhat sensationalized towards human flaws than the average person but there is a degree to which I can understand why each person does certain things and at time I thought to myself "Thats exactly how i would've reacted in that situation."
Though based on my opinions of the situation while sitting comfortably in front of my computer and not trying to destroy a 10 story monstrosity trying to kill the dozen people I'm with, I would have acted similar to Kei but would have made a greater attempt to keep myself in control. For a good portion of the show, Kei just dicks around and tries to impress the girl with the huge tits. Yeah I'd want to score if I knew I was gonna die but if I was in an opportunity to realistically defend myself from what was killing everyone I'd probably be able to keep my libido in check. He's also a pretty big jerk for the first and last thirds of the show. Once he learns how to fight well (and damn does he ever get badass for a while) he pretty quickly stops being a good guy and turns all surly like that guy that gets killed by the robots that look like Rock Lee. Half the people he fought with weren't worth risking his life for (I have to be honest and say I slightly enjoyed it when the grandmother and little kid finally went down after sobbing and being useless for the entire time they existed. The monk got what was coming to him too.) but the guy he was friends with and the original guy that could fight but died were both worth protecting if for no other reason that giving himself some competent back up for the next round. And thats my semi off topic discussion of Gantz. |

I don't think it's even sensationalized; Itano is simply holding up a mirror and showing us the ugliness of the human condition. He touches on topics that are mostly considered taboo by society, like suicide, and the value of a human life (what is a hobo's life worth?) The scene on the subway platform with the hobo on the tracks is archetypical of the societal attitudes and group behavior that is exposed and explored in Gantz. It seems no one took Deltakiral's advice to actually read through the old threads on Gantz. Someone who really wished to get more insight as to why some people like the show (as opposed to just polemicize) would spend their time better reading through the previous articles; people get tired of repeating themselves. |

Well, saying that their characteristics are sensationalized may just be improper wording on my part. It's not entirely that the way they act goes beyond anything that would ever occur to illustrate a point, it's that there is definitive lack of good present in many scenarios in Gantz. Even when the voice of justice seems to be present, it is completely irrational given the circumstances. Saving every person in every conflict is the original goal but when defending themselves becomes an all consuming task, the life of a dog, a moronic monk, and two guys that threatened to kill you ten minutes prior seem quite irrelevant.

Damn it is like Cube, I never really thought about that.
I sorta had the same feelings with this as with 'Lord of the Flies' I disagreed with it thought it was total BS but kill the theme and I could dig the story. It is satisfying seeing characters you hate getting ripped limb from limb--damn I just agreed with the theme--. |

Yup, loving the characters that make irrational decisions and end up paying dearly for them!
