Dude who plays Caproni in the Japanese version's better than Tucci, unfortunately.

Alamo Drafthouse Littleton for the Denver metro area... AND we get a Miyazaki festival in the leadup, it's been fun. Wind Rises is both Sub and Dub.

here's a link... please remove if it's not cool to post. {I don't work there, I just like what they are showing.}

Weird, is it me or does JGL sound a bit flat? :/ I haven't heard the Japanese dub but that was the main complaint about the character's VA according to the forums here, and now JGL too?? And what was the point of posting the Earthquake scene (spoiler much?), the character barely uttered more than a word in it.
Anyway, Tucci sounded convincing enough to me, so no complaints there Smile

All I heard JLG do was grunt, so not sure how he's supposed to sound yet...

Edit: Oh, I didn't see that third clip. JGL sounds fine. And Tucci improved in that scene.

Just got back from a subtitled screening. Yes, Hideaki Anno played Jiro as "flat" (I don't really agree with this term, as I thought it worked for the character in a quiet, subdued sort of way, but I digress), and this seems to be what JGL is going for. Would have to hear more of the dub to really determine what direction he's taking the character, though (Anno's contemplative "flatness" would be hard to duplicate, I suspect).

The Earthquake scene isn't really a spoiler, as it's early in the film and was an actual historical event that happened (Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923), so the whole thing was pretty free of surprises (what a scene! The animation staff really captured the horror of being caught in a town rocked by a devastating earthquake).

I never say this
So please savor this while you can
But the English voice for the protagonist
Sounds SO MUCH BETTER.

I went to go see the film in theaters when it opened in Japan, and I was just... Shocked at how emotionless Anno was. It didn't sound natural, it just sounded... Dead.

I haven't seen The Wind Rises yet, but I will say that of the clips I've seen, I'm sorry but I must disagree about Joseph Gordon-Lewitt. He sounds quite deadpan and emotionless. That is very disappointing, especially considering that Anno supposedly sounded similarly flat. Not a good idea to emulate the Japanese version either. On the other hand, Stanley Tucci sounds TERRIFIC as Caproni. The accent he uses is appropriate and fitting.

Overall, I don't think The Wind Rises will be my favorite Miyazaki dub, but aside from JGL, it didn't sound that bad to me. Nothing to cry foul over, although not anything spectacular either.
