Kickstarter Idea for Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni Kai?

Hi all, I'm just throwing a little idea to the four winds to see where it goes...

Do you think it would be possible for the U.S. to finally get Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni Kai (second season) via Kickstarter?

I know there are quite a few people out there who would like to get their hands on a DVD copy of the second season. And despite people's requests, no company has picked up the license since Funimation gave it up.

Unfortunately, I don't know enough about this to start it up myself, but I definitely think it would be a successful Kickstarter project...I'd at least like to see somebody try to get this series to the U.S.

Or has it been too long for the series? Has interest died out?

If I remember correctly the license on Higurashi is still stupid expensive and a Kickstarter won't help you with it unless your kickstarter project is actually to start an anime localization business with it as your pilot title.

If it IS to start an anime localization business then more power to you but be prepared to promote far more than one title and be aware that it's an absurdly brutal business. Good luck, though.

I would tell those people to pick up Siren Visual's R4 release.

I was looking at that, actually. Now...maybe I'm just uneducated...but isn't the Region 4 part of it a problem? I thought that U.S. DVD players, PS3s, etc. could only play R1 discs.

There are plenty of DVD players that can, with the push of a sequence of buttons on the remote, be changed to be a region free player. Or there are plenty of region-free DVD players out there that can be had for a reasonable price as well. There is also legal computer software that. for most DVD-ROM drives, completely bypasses the region check and so it could be watched on the computer.

I have plenty of R2, R3, and R4 DVDs and have never experienced any issues with any of these possibilities. Some research and Googling is needed, but that's a heck of a lot easier than attempting to organize a Kickstarter and should not be much of an impediment to anybody who wants to legally own an official English release of the series.
