I own the Evangelion Thinpak Platinum Collection boxset. Now, what do I own?

There are so many different bits and pieces of animation for this series that have been released over the years, on top of the movies, which have undergone numerous changes, that I really have a hard time trying to keep track of it.

So, what does my collection actually contain? What about the movies that I have to buy? What do those have? What am I missing, and what do you recommended I buy in terms of the movies?

Finally, was there a "Platinum Collection"-esque release of the movies in Japan? If so, do you know when we might get them, and if I should put off a purchase of the movie(s) until they're released?

The TV series and movies were remastered in Japan a few years ago, and the thinpak contains the remastered TV series. Nothing from the TV series is missing; both the original on-air and director's cut versions of the last six episodes (IIRC) are provided. You still need to buy the movies, as they were released by Manga instead of ADV.

The Platinum Collection has both the original and Director's Cut episodes? I don't remember having two versions of the last six episodes, but I'll go check again...

EDIT: Just checked. The sixth DVD in the collection has the Director's Cut episodes of 21 - 24, but the Director's Cut episodes of 25 and 26 are nowhere to be seen. The confusion is compounded.

Yes. The movies, Death(True)^2 (formerly known as Death and Rebirth, the former portion a recap, the other the first twenty-some minutes of The End of Evangelion) and The End of Evangelion received the same treatment that the television series did.

Last year Manga Ent. had stated that they do have plans do release the remastered movies, apparently in 2007. No word as of yet as of four months into this year, so time will tell.

Depends. The English dub for the movies makes some serious mistakes along with some added (and, in my opinion, downright stupid) dialogue and sound effect additions/edits. The subtitles don't fair as badly, though there are mistakes and omissions of what the original Japanese conveyed (I do not know Japanese myself, but multiple trusted sources have stated such).

If you want to see the movies as soon as possible, and in a legal manner, I'd advise that you just rent The End of Evangelion as Death and Rebirth are unneeded, and if you enjoy the apocalyptic film with a message of hope at the end (and, that's not really spoiling anything), then wait around for Manga Ent. to hopefully release the remasters.

And there are no "director's cut" versions of episodes twenty-five and twenty-six. Only episodes twenty-one to twenty-four were re-released in that manner.

No, you're right; my mistake. I knew that the director's cut episodes spanned two volumes, but I had forgotten the exact range of episodes Embarassed.

Eh?

http://www.rightstuf.com/cgi-bin/catalogmgr/ATFEGMIxDKCN4R80Ga/browse/item/61802/4/0/0

Why does that page say that this DVD contains the remastered episodes 24 - 26, then? Confused

NGE1113, you also said that *most* of the new footage in Death and Rebirth was added to the Director's Cut episodes of the TV series, but does anyone know what exactly I may be missing by not getting Death & Rebirth?

Thanks for all the help so far!

That's rather strange. I'd have to chalk it up to a mistake on Right Stuf's part concerning the director's cut episodes. The remastered part... For the life of me, I want to say that when the DC episodes were initially put out, it was from the remastered episodes that were available in Japan at the time, but I'm not exactly sure.

Actually, I made a pretty good gaffe when I posted them; I've since taken it out not to confuse anybody. Check out what HellKorn's post above about what Death & Rebirth is composed from. As he said, it's nothing more than a recap of the TV series and an extended preview of EoE. Between finals week and the pressure of finding a place to live next year, my brain's kind of fried at the moment.

The only thing that (I know of ) you'd miss for sure: bridges between segments of Death & Rebirth featuring the Children practicing on stage (or something along those lines); nothing major. There may be more, but it's just not coming to me right now.

Tell me about it. I'm very much a dub person, but I just couldn't stand listening to the English audio track during a certain scene where Amanda Winn-Lee thought the sound effect wasn't "goopy" enough. It's horrible enough to put in such a worthless edit, but that combined with her giddiness on doing so during the commentary track, pretty much eliminated all respect I had for her work since.

Screw up. There is no "director's cut" versions of twenty-five and twenty-six.

That's it. And those little scenes with Shinji, Asuka, Rei, and Kaworu coming in that order don't fit at all with the timeline, so it's just a "cool effect," or what superficial thing you care to call it.

The commentary track is pure BS anyway. Amanda Winn-Lee is someone I like as a voice actress, but I don't want her touching any dubbing script. Never mind the change in Death where spoiler[the slap was changed to a gunshot, missing the point Anno was making with that transition.]

Oh, and very nice Ran avatar, NGE1113. I'm loving it.

For my money, I just wish there was a way that Taliesin Jaffe had been able to do the commentary alone. At least he did his homework (on the symbolism and whatnot) before he started speaking.

Back in the days of Devil Hunter Yohko and whatnot, I enjoyed her work. Funny how one incident will turn one's perspective of another upside-down...

And that's how much of a dub person I am; I never knew that until tonight. Guess on the next rewatch it'll be in Japanese.

I'm pretty sure it's gonna be around for a while longer. And time to come clean. You might have guessed it, but it's nothing more than a crop from a pic of the sixth DVD cover.

What do I own, I own every volume of NGE in it's original vhs release. I have yet to upgrade to dvd for my own collection. I also own the rare and hard to find pity party and self mutilation Shinji doll with real series phrases. Even comes with snap on knife to cut yourself and soap box to stand on and rant about your pity party. Every collectors dream!
