I recently bought disk 1 of Gankutsuou. When i took the cd out of the package it wasnt properly stored in there and had been jostled around a bit. The first three episodes played fine... but the last one was significantly messed up. Suffice to say, i thought i could find a fansub online and stupidly bought disk 2 without seeing episode 4. After not finding anything, I read that this episode was significant in that in told the background of Albert's mother and I sort of feel obligated to know that part of the story before i move on to disk 2.
So, I was wondering if anyone had a quick synopsis of what happens in this episode so I can FINALLY move on to number 5. I've found nothing on the internet about this at all. Oh, and please use spoiler tags. Thanks. |

spoiler[ Basically, you have The Count meeting Alberts family for dinner. He eats very little and says over the years, he became accustomed to that sort of behavior, gets little sleep, and survives on these space pills. Mercedes then has him try a specialty soup of hers and he's reminded of a past experience (no flashback, just talks about it). He then goes to ask if Mercedes is from Marseilles, and she says no, and Fernand is saying "she'd never be from such a barbaric place."]
spoiler[ After dinner, Mercedes is standing by herself on a balcony when The Count shows up and they talk a little bit making obscure and subtle references to his past. After he leaves, you later get Albert approaching his mother when notices her staring at an old picture of someone.] spoiler[ Alber then remains paranoid and is wondering just who the person in the photo was and has a dream about finding a picture of The Count in her drawer, but wakes up as he does. Afterwards, he and his friends recieve an invitation to The Count's estate, then as he's dressing up, Peppo says he's not dressing flambouyant enough, and he wears some goofy looking pirate suit.] spoiler[ When they end up going, they arrive at a plain looking house only to take an elevator down the "main compound" as I'll call it where everything is freakin' gold plated  (brilliant artwork as always!). They travel down a really long hallway to meet The Count, and the episode ends there.]
The episode after this is where things start to pick up, even more so than previous episodes, yes, but there's a particular event here between spoiler[ Albert and Maxamillian] that I found to be some great drama and general philosophy on the concept of an aristocracy. |

Gamestop sells a bottle of disc-cleaning solution I've had great results with in the past... squeeze a lil' of the brown goop onto the scratches, rub at a 90 degree angle with something soft (I use cotton rounds from the drugstore), give the whole disc a quick once-over then buff to shine with a clean cloth/round. I can only name 2 discs whose errors couldn't be fixed this way... and one wasn't scratched to begin with (I think it was heat damaged).
I'm told you can get similar results with plain white toothpaste, but I've never actually tried it. It's a good episode, so I'd definitely try something to clean up that disc and see it. |

Thank you Tony K for the summary... gold plated house?! Sounds like something the Count would have...
And thank you DualladyS... i think i might try that... I'm not really sure though about using toothpaste
